I've only watched the first two episodes. I have #3 waiting for me tonight. I'm enjoying it. I think it's funny and original. Looking forward to more. I really liked Tiny Furniture, too. It's also great to see a female have (seemingly) complete creative control over her product (I despise this word but I can't think of a better one right now).

That really creepy line the artist said about "When I do fuck you, it may scare you a little, because I'm a man and I know how to do things" was apparently some dude said to Lena Dunham IRL. Then he was all, "my buddy who works at Vice Magazine told me to use that line."

I wonder if it's a generational thing? Because I think this show is completely hideous, not funny, and cringey. I couldn't relate at all to SATC (I've been married forever, and was never much of a sleep around), but I still loved it. But then again, I am that age and my kids are more the age of these girls. It just all feels so depressing. My sympathies to you guys who relate to it (I hope that didn't sound insulting! SO didn't mean to).

I see where you are coming from. I'm not saying that my life mirrors those of the people on the show by any means. Just the way that they talk to each other and some of the mistakes that they make are very easy to relate to. However I don't think all of it is just a generational thing, like what magazinewhore noted about girls mistaking sex for affection.

I think Lena Dunham is really talented. I loved Tiny Furniture and think Girls shows a lot of promise. I am a married suburbanite with kids and have been out of college for more than ten years, so I do not relate to any of her characters on any demographic level, but she's got a very clearly defined voice. I love the cinematographer she uses, too.

I also think it's kinda a generational thing in that may be more relatable to people in their 20s now who are currently dealing with the recession. It's easy to look back and be all "yeah, my 20s were awesome! Why aren't these girls having more fun!?," but a lot of people now can no longer land jobs just by virtue of being a college graduate. There's a lot of anxiety and even the "rich" people have to live less glamorously. Also, there's a shift in women having more casual sex/taking charge of their sexuality - but that also means that not every encounter is going to be romantic. I think these girls are at a point where they don't quite know what they want yet and are going to make a lot of mistakes. Which is fine. People do.
I agree Newt, what makes it interesting is Lena's voice. Especially because she acts/writes/directs. Not everyone is obligated to like that voice, of course, but the reason I respond to the show ultimately boils down to that.

Then he was all, "my buddy who works at Vice Magazine told me to use that line." Mr. S and I heard it, looked at each other, and were both, like, "What the fuck ever. Would ANYONE fall for that shit? Really?" I guess he thought it was supposed to be menacingly sexy? Think again, twerp. Marnie's about the only character I can stand, and I was surprised when she didn't bust out laughing at him.

I'm in my 40s now, married, but I went through all sorts of stuff like this in my 20s. And that time was depressing! I thought I was ugly, dating and sex could be really awkward, I was often lonely, several boyfriends I'm pretty sure were gay... at least I had a good job! I would hate to wake up 20 today.

One of the most cringe-worthy things, for me, is watching Hannah rationalize her continued relations w/ the cretin she sleeps with. It is painful watching her believe ANYTHING he says and hang on to every morsel of possible affection he gives her, just in the hope that ONE DAY he's going to want to turn it around and be her real Boyfriend. It is painful because I've been there, and I'm sure lots of other people have too! I just want to grab her and be like, "DUDE. NO."

It is painful because I've been there, and I'm sure lots of other people have too! I just want to grab her and be like, "DUDE. NO." Yeah, that was painful to see her hook up with him again after the furry dick picture on last night's episode. Unfortunately, it is totally believable, though. That guy is totally gross. I didn't get Hannah claiming that he's charming, because...NO! I guess he really appeals to her in some weird way. The other very painful moment to watch was Marnie's dickhead boyfriend playing his "Hannah's Diary" song. Look dude, I understand that you're offended and upset, but you should have NEVER read her diary in the first place. Plus just because Hannah wrote that Marnie whined about him didn't necessarily mean that what Marnie had said was that bad (I mean, it was, but there wasn't any way for him to know that). She could have just been venting about him. I didn't feel bad for him at all after he let his creepy friend go through Marnie and Hannah's stuff, SNIFF MARNIE'S VIBRATOR(!!!), handle Hannah's underwear, and then read Hannah's diary before reading it himself. What. A. Jackass. Well, what jackasses, both of those guys. And Marnie shouldn't be mad at Hannah. I'm sure she will get over it, though. I wonder if Marnie and her boyfriend will actually break up or if this will just be what pushes her into cheating on him with Booth Jonathan. Poor virgin Shoshanna is really growing on me. Someone just sleep with her already! The entire episode was worth it just for Hannah's eyebrows.
