Yes! Why oh why didn't she just rub that sh*t off after work?! She looked like an owl.
Just watched all 4 episodes yesterday and I really like the show. It's getting better with each episode.

I feel like my 20s were pretty similar (and they were 20 years ago); it was the early 90s, there was a recession, it was really hard to find a job when I graduated in 1992. There was a lot of media coverage about how we were the first generation to do worse than their parents. Then the internet boom began and people began to get hired.
But more importantly, I did shit like this when I was dating, even through my 30s (to a much lesser degree). I liked some guys more than they liked me and sometimes vice versa. I honestly think Girls is very much similar in tone to Bridesmaids and Wiig's character was in her late 30s. She basically acted the same way with guys. It was a broader comedy, but still.
Yes, there's a bit of annoying navel gazing, but that was true of SATC and they were way less realistic about privilege and economics.
I think it's great that there's a show from the POV of a young, single woman that isn't transparently designed to be appreciated by men. It isn't New Girl. I love that.

The flashback to the college party was great. Hannah's gay-now-not-back-then boyfriend getting all "Squee!" over Scissor Sisters was hilarious. More Shoshanna, please!

OMG, they showed Peter Scolari's wang! That was crazy. I'm glad the older folks are getting some action, too, though.
I liked this episode a lot... Hannah was being a brat at first, but then it got better. I think hooking up with the cute (but boring) pharmacist was a nice ego boost for her. Too bad she'll just go back to Adam, but whatever.

Here's my only problem with this episode (besides Scolari's wang): I just can't believe she's from the Midwest. I'm from the Midwest; my husband is from East Lansing and although I think they portrayed it well, I just can't believe her as anything but a born and bred New Yorker.
I do think they got the bittersweet annoyance/ill ease one feels when they return "home" from a living in a big city. Also, I think they did a good job capturing the feel of how people are different in a middle-sized college town vs. a big city.
Also, every time I see Scolari, I think he's gay because her ex bf said so.

I thought it was interesting that Hannah was so openly derisive of her old friend's plan to move to Hollywood and become a professional dancer, yet had no self-awareness that she was doing the same thing trying to become a writer in New York. I did like that her dad openly wondered whether or not Hannah even had the talent to make it.
I wasn't sure whether or not the viewer was supposed to think that Hannah was as deluded as the dancer or not. Personally I think that the character of Hannah is deluded and isn't going to hack it as a writer. The character is obviously somewhat based on Lena Dunham, who obviously is hacking it as a professional writer, but Lena shows a lot more drive and ambition than Hannah does, so it all kind of gets mushed together in my mind.
As a born-and-bred Midwesterner (who has lived her adult life on both coasts), I kind of agree that I don't buy Hannah as anything but a New Yorker, and I think she was a little bit too derisive of her peers back home, but I did love her speech about why the hell were they all killing themselves to be broke in New York when they could be living and focusing on their art elsewhere.

See, I thought she *definitely* has some degree of self-awareness - and what she was sneering about made her realize it hit too close to home. It's so hard to tell though because Lena's deadpan delivery is perfection so I think sometimes I interpret stuff that "Hannah" isn't actually doing but am projecting. Or "Hannah" doesn't know it, but the show - and the writing/direction of Lena and others - is aware of the irony and double-standards.
Her school's mascot was identical to my high school - same colors and everything - that this was a very 'OMG, this IS my life' episode. Whoever does the music supervision for this show is killer because the Edwin McCain "I'll Be" was perfect. I also loved that all the pizza places and whatnot played songs from several years ago. That's something I've noticed majorly when I go back to smaller towns from LA/NY. The radio here in my time in PA is KILLING ME.
I believe that Lena has indicated that Woody Allen is the filmmaker who she most admires/who has most influenced her, so Daddy Scolari's GODAWFUL 'Annie Hall' impression killed me. I thought there was also some degree of subtext with the 'how long is it going to take her to realize stuff, 30 years?' falling on her parents' anniversary - like the dad was also wondering if the spark was still alive within his marriage. Which, sorry, but kinda creepy to invite your daughter to your romantic anniversary weekend.
Something that I think would be incredible would be for Lena and Louie CK to switch shows for an episode. Since he does the writing/directing/etc/acting in all of Louie (actually, Woody Allen's longtime editor is taking over in S3), I know Louie has tweeted support for Lena's show in terms of 'you go with your auteur self."

I dunno, I think Hannah was dead-on about the dancer girl and I don't necessarily think it's the same as Hannah trying to be a writer in NYC. Hannah at least graduated college, she had support from her parents (at first) and a friend to live with, she even landed a good internship for awhile. And based on her parents' reactions to her writing and what others have said I think she probably does have talent. I think that's a lot different from some small-town, dim-acting girl who likely has no idea of what she's getting into, moving to LA to be a "dancer" with no connections and no means whatsoever to support herself. Yeah Hannah isn't doing much now, but I think she's stuck in a rut and I'm hoping she will show growth by next season at least.
Meanwhile, the dancer girl is most definitely going to end up stripping, doing porn, or in a worst-case scenario, found in a dumpster after showing up for an "audition" she saw posted on Craigslist.

I *am* dying to see Shoshanna accidentally smoke crack next week, from the trailer.
I love Zosia Mamet on Mad Men too.

I *am* dying to see Shoshanna accidentally smoke crack next week, from the trailer. I know, that looks hilarious. Jesus Christ, poor Shoshanna! I laughed at Hannah getting tossed off Adam's bike, too. Adam is such a shithead. ETA: Okay, so apparently Chris O'Dowd is going to be in the next episode. YES! Spoilers:Episode 8: “Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too” (airs June 3) Hannah will “venture further into Adam’s world,” which means, sadly, we haven’t seen the last of him leading her on, and Jessa will be “newly unemployed.” Does she get called out on her flirtation with the boss’s husband so soon? Marnie will be “at an all-time low,” and bond with Jessa before meeting “a very eligible bachelor who is not what he seems.” Bonus: The handsome stranger will be played by Chris O’Dowd, the Irish cop who fell for Kristen Wiig’s character in Bridesmaids.
Episode 9: “Leave Me Alone” (airs June 10) Finally! We were wondering when Hannah would have to deal with that pesky little problem known as Money. Hannah will start working at Café Grumpy, where she “does a reading hosted by a former professor.” The professor is played by Michael Imperioli, who we will always lovingly remember as Christ-ah-fuh on The Sopranos. She’ll be “behind on rent and resentful of the literary success of a former classmate,” played by Saturday Night Live alum Jenny Slate. Also: Marnie will be uncomfortable “support[ing] Hannah financially and emotionally.” And Girls will explore the world of online dating via Shoshanna going on a day date with “an online match.” Bonus: Katherine Hahn will appear again and confront Jessa.
Episode 10: “She Did” (Season 1 finale, airs June 17) Ugh, Adam will still be around! But at least “Hannah starts to question her relationship” with him. Starts to? Geez. The rest sounds promising: “Jessa throws a mystery party, where Marnie embraces her free-spirited side.” In other words, Marnie will hook up with a rebound guy, and Jessa will be in her full fabulous element. Bonus: “Shoshanna’s uniqueness works in her favor.” In other words, we desperately hope this means Shoshanna gets laid.
