I'm on Ellen's side. If she wasn't a fan of Joan's work, it would have been insincere to do a tribute.

Re: the article- a THREE hour show? No thanks. That sounds tedious.
I didn't like Joan Rivers either. She WAS mean! And I don't know how much I like Kathy anymore, either.

The lauding of Joan Rivers has always mystified me. Obviously I don’t know her early work, and her struggle as a female comedian in her time. What I know of Joan Rivers was a nasty, rude, hateful, unfunny piece of work. I wouldn’t blame anyone for not buying into it. I have never been into Kathy Griffin. I think the outcry over her stupid Trump beheading thing was stupid, and she shouldn’t have been punished for it. That said, there is something about her that is kind of off. I feel like she has a lot of lies and excuses, and problems with a lot of people.

What I know of Joan Rivers was a nasty, rude, hateful, unfunny piece of work. I have to chuckle at this, because I already liked her, but I became a ride or die Joan Rivers fan when I watched her documentary, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. I completely understand people not liking her comedy, but she was a complicated woman and was more than just jokes. I found her really fascinating in that movie and developed a lot of sympathy toward her. She came across as a very professional performer who gave it her all, even into her 80s. She had all her jokes written down and categorized in a huge card file. The jokes are dated, but hell some of them were so freakin' funny. FWIW, I am not a fan of Ellen's comedy. I respect her as a social activist, but I've never liked her product much, and she has a bad reputation behind the scenes. I am totally off Kathy. I liked her stand up specials on Bravo, but she will throw anyone under the bus for her comedy. She has burned so many bridges that I'm honestly surprised that she has anyone left in the business that will talk to her.

I feel like she has a lot of lies and excuses, and problems with a lot of people. There are so many things that I disliked about Joan. There was a discussion going on here about things Donald Glover has said in his act over the years. I think I am the only one that (partially) defended him in that thread and it did occur to me that some of the posters who blasted him were really vocal about praising Joan following her death. She's said way more vicious and hateful stuff than he has. I think my dislike for her is rooted in my selective exposure to her. I remember seeing her break down publicly over someone joking about Edgar when I was in my teens, but she regularly told jokes about other people dying. That, along with her appearance on "The Apprentice" has always made me think she's probably a lot like Kathy, different rules about what she dishes out vs what she thinks she should take. Her Michelle Obama jokes really soured me on her, too. Not that the Obamas can't be joked about, but of course Joan worked doubletime earning her hack stripes there.

I give Joan props as a trailblazer and for her charity work. But I don't think we'd have been friends had we ever met.
Kathy doesn't come out well in this argument, a tribute to someone you don't like would be awkward at best and hypocritical at worst.

I am no Ellen fan (based on trusted friend’s personal accounts of what she is like when the cameras aren’t on her) however if Ellen isn’t/wasn’t a fan of Joan, who the eff is Kathy Griffin to tell her she has to a tribute to her?
Why is Kathy so entitled? Maybe she should stop being so bitter and concentrating on the negative and try to propel her career forward in a positive fashion.

What's the scoop on Ellen's behind-the-scenes bad behavior? I GUESS today's a good day for yet another childhood idol to be squashed...

What's the scoop on Ellen's behind-the-scenes bad behavior? I GUESS today's a good day for yet another childhood idol to be squashed... There was a long discussion about this on another thread a couple of months back.... Stars I Hate? Schadenfreude? Basically, she's really terrible to work for and can be extremely nasty and mean in private. Funny how Kathy never mentioned before that her feud with Ellen involved someone calling the other an untalented hack. Page Six said it was Kathy who called Ellen that? Kathy always acted like Ellen hated her for no good reason. Either way, Ellen is free to not like Joan Rivers. There are plenty of good reasons not to.

I think she's forgotten how to do that. There was a time when she talked about dating and her mom and outings with her dogs, but she's abandoned most of that comedy in favor of stories of encounters with her celebrity friends and enemies, probably because those of the ones that got her extra attention, which she craves above all else apparently.
