He's a very good actor (I'm a new-ish Sherlock fan) but I think he must have the best agents in the world. The man gets cast in so many high profile movies, it's unbelievable. This upcoming awards season, he'll star in the Wikileaks movie, he has a role in Twelve Years A Slave and will also be in August Osage County. All three of those are already considered contenders. Granted, the only lead role out of these will be the Julian Assange one but still. He was already in Star Trek this year, there's a new Sherlock season coming up and his voice will be heard in the latest Hobbit mess.
As for the sometimes questionable quotes....maybe he's one of those who come across well in TV interviews (he seems charming in those) but somewhat obnoxious in print. A bit like Fishstick Paltrow then ;-)

I had never heard of him before until the Star Trek movie. Last night our local PBS station had Small Island on. He was very good but dude is so weird looking, like a reptile.

I like him. It's weird, I don't find him attractive, but I think he's an interesting actor and is very funny, silly, and charming in interviews.

A bit like Fishstick Paltrow then ;-) I think he's like Clooney in that he's been a working actor for a while, considered very good (at least in the UK), but never really broke out until he landed a television role that changed everything for him and his fame exploded. For Clooney it was ER, for Cumberbatch, it was Sherlock. And he's certainly striking as much as he can while the iron is hot - I'm beginning to wonder if the dude ever takes a day off. As for the quotes that landed him in hot water, I think they were totally blown out of proportion. Nothing he said was that bad, and had a bit of truth to them (2nd season of Downton Abbey did suck, BC's perceived "poshness" does keep him from getting cast in a lot of roles - First World Problems, yes, but I'm sure frustrating for an actor who wants a shot at a variety of roles). I think his major problem was that he's a motor-mouth without much of a PR filter between his brain and his mouth that tells him, "Dude, you can say this stuff to your friends, but not to a reporter." All the same, he seems to have learned his lesson since he managed to keep his foot out of his mouth during the Star Trek press tour. Looks-wise, he's like Tilda Swinton for me in that from some angles I think he's downright beautiful in an odd way (not handsome - beautiful), and at others he's odd-looking. But if he just rocks his looks with confidence like SWINTON, it works in his favor (as Tumblr will tell you). I can't help but like the guy. He's a good actor and as mentioned above, he comes off as sweet and goofy in his interviews. And he wasn't at Comic Con this week to promote Sherlock because he was in Spain officiating at a wedding for two friends. Shows he's got his priorities right.

I think he knows this time is his BIG CHANCE and he doesn't want to blow it. Of course, if he's not careful he risks pulling a Jude Law and becoming overexposed. I also agree he did well PR wise during the Star Trek. My guess is he worked with a PR person to help him craft his answers. He admits he has a tendency to ramble and that probably leads to his foot in mouth quotes. He doesn't seem to know when to zip it. He does seem to be a nice guy overall. Did anybody read the interview he did with Caitlin Moran. He invited her over to his parents' home and at one point his mother pulled a, "For the love of God when are you going to get married and give me grandbabies?!" It was funny how he went from confident actor to "Moooommmmmm! You're embarrassing me!"

True that - at least 12 Years a Slave and August Osage County are ensemble pieces where he plays small-to-mediums sized roles and the Hobbit stuff is just voice/motion capture work (and I honestly don't think I could get tired of his voice. He's on my "Can read the phone book to me" list). But still - it's okay to take a vacation, dude.

I don't think that Benedict Cumberbatch has to worry about failing/fading the way Jude Law did. Jude was always being prepped as "the next leading man". Benedict seems fine with being a character actor (who happens to be the lead actor on a popular BBC show that seldom shoots).

He was on Top Gear last week and came across really well. He also looked particularly good, in a shaggy, tan, casual kind of way. He does have a unique look, but I suspect it lets him play a wider range of parts.
