I like him as an actor, but his name always reminds me of one of Eddie Izzard's jokes about the rejected stage names Engelbert Humperdink went through before settling on Engelbert Humperdink.
Benedict should have gone with "Slut VanWalla".

He reminds me of Kif Kroker off Futurama.

I know I wrote this last year, but ever since I saw him on stage, I don't even see the weirdness in his looks anymore. Before that I was firmly team "only somewhat hot as Sherlock". After Hamlet, I find him super attractive. Sorry not sorry, as the kids today would say ;-)

I saw him on stage in Frankenstein, in which he and Jonny Lee Miller were trading off the main roles. I happened to see him on a night when he played the monster. He could not have been more suited for that role, looks-wise.
I think he is ugly from every angle, and not ugly-hot, just ugly. I think he's a good actor and I'm ok with him in movies, provided there aren't too many closeups of his face. But I don't see any excess of charm or charisma there to make him sexy. He's no Alan Rickman. In fact, I randomly clicked on a "Benedict Cumberbatch Funny Moments" video on youtube the other night, and he's really not funny. Nice enough, but not especially funny.
I also remember interviews he and Hiddleston did to promote Warhorse. As thirsty and show-offy as Hiddleston is, Cumberbatch managed to outdo him. Cumberbatch was using $10 vocabulary words that were not being used for the sake of effective communication but for the sake of showing off. Hiddleston doesn't do that and I think he'd have more right to because he's smarter.
Also, his wife is probably not an abusive narcissist who is guilty of fraud, blackmail and drug trafficking, but damn is she a stuffy-looking frump. She dresses like she is so much older than she is, and I wonder if part of it is wanting to be taken seriously as a self-proclaimed "avant garde" theater director because back when she was trying to be an actress, she dressed like one.

Someone on ONTD once said that Benedict Cumberbatch looked like what would result if a blind alien tried to make a sculpture based off of another alien's description of a human. The OP phrased it way better, but I recall thinking it was a devastatingly accurate way to describe his look.

Michael K once had a picture of Cumberbatch & bride looking weirdly similar and said they both looked like a police sketch of an alien. I think he looks like Butthead.

These descriptions are so accurate. To me I think the reason why he is a sex symbol *shudder* is because he is so damn ugly it makes him attainable in a way.

I've seen him in person a few times, and all I can say is he doesn't look that odd to me now. I did find him incredibly charismatic, so I think that has something to do with it. Before then, he was just a 'no'. If the charisma vanished, so too would my feelings on his looks.
I still don't see the sad sack person the obsessives bray on about, and I do agree with Ginger that he wants to be famous really, really badly.... I think he'd be exhausting to live with.

He's hosting SNL in a few weeks. He seems to have a good sense of humor and isn't afraid to laugh at himself.

I work in theatre in London and his wife is actually reasonably well respected within the indie/experimental theatre world. Not big, and no bigger than a hundred other people I know, but a perfectly respectable career.
