I am really, really enjoying this show. The Norsemen in it are such a contrast to the people descended from them. It's all so fascinating - it's not exact history, of course, but super cool nonetheless.

The Norsemen in it are such a contrast to the people descended from them. What? You mean they no longer blow snot into the communal water bowl as it gets passed around anymore? Bah, these kids today no longer understand the importance of tradition.

I really love this show and I'm glad it's renewed for a 10-episode second season. Ragnar is such a magnificent arrogant asshole. Lagertha and Siggy are great female characters, and the boy is probably going to be a little prick. Knowing what happens to the real Ragnar makes me squeamish; these were a nasty people. Glad that Athelstan wasn't sacrificed and his evolution is fascinating.

Love this show, the second season is really bringing it. Athelstan's crucifixion was hard to watch, but Lagertha's awesomeness made up for it. Love that her son always has her back. And as much as Ragnar is a violent, selfish, pillaging asshole, Travis Fimmel makes him likable. That's quite an accomplishment.

I'm watching too! I love this show. Ragnar's soft voice is hella creepy, given how violent he is. I don't know much about Viking history, but from what I gather Ragnar was a real-ish person (or perhaps a mish-mash of several people). I know they are following his story more or less, but this is my long winded way of saying I hope he and Lagertha get back together. I hate princess moody-pants.
I love the interaction between the Vikings and the English (or Saxons? I will use English for simplicity here), but I am having a hard time parsing just how this tiny band of Vikings could take over wherever they show up. Were the English really that bad at fighting? And I caught the comment by one of the English to Ragnar, when R asked who made the statues...the Englishman said "no one knows". Is that really true of the Dark Ages? No one knew the Romans built the baths or the roads or brought the artwork to England? My background is in poli-sci, so while I understand the history of law we never got into those types of details.

Ragnar Lothbrook was a real person and he had three wives, including Lagertha the Shieldmaiden and Princess Aslaug. He has four sons with Aslaug.
I thnk the Viking battles were so success ful because they fought so viciously, so offensively. As opposed to the defensive style of the Brits. The Vikings weren't afraid to get hurt and they just went nuts with axes and knives and swords, hence being known as Berserkers. In one episode, a British soldier says, "I've never seen people fight like they do."
Even though Ragnar is violent, I find Travis Fimmel's portrayal to be charismatic, he makes this killer likable.
