I looove this song. Also, don't mess with shieldmaidens!
ETA: "Like wings" was creepily Hannibal-like to me! Horrifying.

Awesome song.
I'm really enjoying this show. It's kind of game of thrones like but things happen and storylines move forward. I can't figure out Siggys end game. Is she trying to get rid of Ragnar so Rollo can make a move or is she trying to get Horik to take her away? I can't figure out if she's really into Rollo or not.
And Lagertha is one of my favorite female characters from any show ever. She is magnificent. I really hope we get to see her as an Earl leading her own men on a raid or something. Just more Lagertha all the time.
Rollo's huge side eye to the earl talking to his dead wife's skull was hilarious.

Siggy has lost everything - her husband, children, position and money. Although women had more power in that culture than many olden days places, she still has some limits. I think she's just looking out for number one right now, playing a few different hands to see what positions her best in the long haul.
And yeah, the blood eagle was something. When the Seer was telling Jarl Borg that he would be like an eagle, and it pleased him, I was thinking, "Oh dude, if only you knew..." It's a brutal method of torture and I don't really see how people survived having their back sliced open, their ribs cracked (although most of Borg's ribs are probably already cracked after that ass kicking he received) and spread out, and then their lungs pulled out. They would still be alive after all that? Because then the truly sadistic would throw salt on it. {{{shudder}}}

Anyone else get a sense of foreboding about Floki and Helga's impending nuptials? (Flolga? Helki?) I get a strong "plot device" vibe...I like Helga and don't want to see her die but I feel it might happen to move things along for Floki. Give him something to focus on.

It would actually be a fast death as they'd lose consciousness from shock and die quickly from blood loss. Even if they were still alive (unlikely) when the lungs were pulled out they'd die of suffocation immediately after since the diaphragm and intercostal muscles are required for breathing. There's some debate over whether it was ever actually done or something that is folkloric and an embellishment of something far more mundane.

I had no idea a blood eagle was something quite specific when Ragnar told the other earl he would be drawing one on his back. I thought he was being weirdly poetic and/or his creepily menacing self. Then I came here, was spurred to do some googling, and saw how wrong I was. Urk.
Interesting how Floki had a unification ceremony that was for love, the English had a joining ceremony for power (the children of the two kings), and Ragnor, dressed in white like a bride, had a solemn ceremony that united him with cruelty. It is making me wonder if Ragnor will meet his ultimate fate during the run of the series and they will then focus on his sons. It is called Vikings, after all, not Ragnor.
I was a little taken aback at Floki suddenly being fed up with Ragnar. Where did that come from, exactly? I do not remember any hints that Floki was dissatisfied with Ragnor, I thought they were besties. Now it appears the dissatisfaction is being set up as part of Ragnor's fall. Aww. I love Floki and Ragnor together, I don't want to see them break up. I am still bummed about Lagertha being ditched! I also agree that something baaaad will happen to Helga, and that will be Floki's tipping point. I'd love to be wrong though.
And I picked this show over Scandal to watch live this week, in case any History Channel peeps are reading. Vikings ftw!

I was a bit surprised at Floki's reaction to Ragnar too, but Ragnar has changed a LOT over time... Maybe he just senses something amiss, with his new power and whatnot.

That blood eagle "ceremony" was something. While they mostly avoided actually showing it, the horror and cruelty surely came through. I thought it was a beautiful bit of film-making.
Scrabblequeen, are you aware of Ragnar's story, and what happens to him? I've done some googling, and I was also wondering what the showrunners have in mind. They've jumped ahead once, they could easily jump ahead 20 years to show Ragnar's sons, who became legendary warriors. Of course, they would have to address Ragnar's fate then, and I would miss Fimmel's sexy bad boy.
