This was a great episode. The actor playing Captain Randall is knocking it out of the park. Claire was so desperate to see some good in him, wanting so badly to believe that her husband wasn't the descendant of a total monster, and he manipulated the hell out of her. Then - bam! Evil bastard all over again.
I would have thought for sure that Jamie would have made it past hickies with the local lasses by now, but no matter. Claire is going to be an excellent teacher.

It is a twist on a classic trope. Normally, in the romance genre, it's the woman who is the naive virgin not the man. It's a little surprising but I can see it how it worked out. Jamie has been on the run which doesn't allow a lot of time for romance and Jamie doesn't strike me as the one night stand type. Claire's reaction to Jamie's virginity gave a much needed giggle fit. That flogging scene was brutal! I had took look away at one point. It's amazing Jamie didn't die and at one point it certainly appeared Randall was coming dangerously close to killing him. FYI, Moore stated in his podcast the guy standing behind Dougal clutching the top of his sword is Jamie's dad. This made the book fans pretty happy. Yes poor Claire! She so desperately wanted there to be some good in Randall and he played her like a fiddle! But it does go to show even honorable people can descend from some pretty horrible people. It really makes me wonder how the history (well fictional history books) have written Black Jack since Frank has never acted uncomfortable while discussing him. The other thing that struck me was the arrogance of English officers. They openly insult Dougal's accent, dress, and his overall way of life and then in the same breath wonder how the English were going to make nice with the Scottish?! Ummm, how about showing some respect for Scottish culture? That might be a start!

Re: the arrogance of the English officers. That was all true. They did view the Scottish as savages (not to mention the Irish). It seems weird to us now, but the Brits brutally took Scottish land and turned out thousands of people (not to mention the ones they killed). It wasn't until I went to Scotland that I really learned how brutal the English had been. Sir Walter Raleigh and Edmund Spenser (author of "The Faerie Queen") both took over a castles in Ireland and were basically war criminals.
So, I figured it out: I love this show because it does history authentically (except for a man like Jamie being a virgin). It's porn for history nerds like me.

Is this show airing in England or Scotland right now? What an episode to have right before the independence vote!
Thanks for posting this! Now I have to go back and watch it again (oh great). In the book, there is significance to his father being there.
All the leads did an amazing job this week. I loved that bastard Dougal's genuine concern for Claire. "Are ye alright, lassie?" And bravo to the way they remind us that Claire herself is a combat vet of sorts. Tobias Menzies should submit this for an Emmy nomination. And can you believe this is Caitriona Balfe's first major acting role? She is hitting it out of the park.
Even in the book, Jamie's virginity is a bit unrealistic to me, but it does make the love scenes more interesting!

The only thing I'm pissed about is Starz splitting the first season into two parts...with part two airing at a date TBD in 2015. If they end just before the sex really starts, I'll scream. And who knew a former Victoria's Secret model could pull off such a demanding role. Well done Cait! This is quickly becoming my favorite show. (And my mother is still laughing at me for dismissing her passion for the books when they first came out). I found this episode riveting. All the actors hit it out of the park for me. Like Claire, I was taken in by Black Jack's seeming change of heart, and then he turned the knife. I'm sure his people will submit this episode for Golden Globes and Emmys. That torture scene was right out of "12 Years' a Slave". When the skin was coming off....Yikes! Unfortunately, I don't think any sovereign nation can lay claim that they treated the losing side with respect and dignity. Hell, look what just happened in Ferguson, Mo. If I were Claire, I'd probably be dead in about 24 hours from spouting off w/ all of my liberal views. My boobs would only take me so far! I don't know that "Outlander" is currently airing in the UK, but talk about perfect timing. Sam Heughen has been pretty vocal about Scottish independence. We'll see what happens in three days!

I don't believe Outlander is airing in the UK currently, some speculate that the TV stations there want to avoid accusations of partiality in the independence debate.

Even in the book, Jamie's virginity is a bit unrealistic to me, but it does make the love scenes more interesting! You know for all of Dougal's faults I don't think he would harm someone just for the sick thrill of it. He doesn't like Claire but he wouldn't hurt her just because he can. I do think his concern for Claire was sincere but it was also made clear he would have killed Claire if she had complained about her stomach hurting two seconds after drinking water from the spring. Though in Dougal's mind it would have been justified because Claire had just been proven to be a spy. Even then I don't think he would have liked it. And yeah I do know the English officers attitudes were historically accurate. Still, it's mind blowing just how dense they were. Especially since one reason why the officers were convinced they were better than the Scottish is because of their English education. Really one would think common sense would tell you insulting somebody's culture is going to put a person on the defensive. There's no need to worry Saturday's ep will end before the sex starts. Kind online souls slowed down the part of the promo that went at rapid speed and yeah THE SEX HAPPENS! I must say I wonder how {Spoiler}the infamous strapping/spanking scene will be handled. It's been confirmed it's definitely happening but man done the wrong way and that can seriously turn people off.

Praise Jeebus, the wedding night episode certainly delivered. I've heard the sex was a bit different than in the book, but...I thought it was perfect. The rewind button on my DVR remote is going to be getting a workout this week.

Points for realism with Jamie lasting about 45 seconds the first time and squishing Claire in the process. But he rallied for the follow-up performances.
And what the hell, Dougal? Just be smart, dude. This will only be trouble.
