Fifty Shades of Grey is easily seducing the North American box office, grossing a potent $30.2 million Friday for a possible $80 million-plus debut over the long Valentine's Day and Presidents Day weekend.

Overseas, the results are even more astounding. The movie is opening to No. 1 in 56 markets for a projected $158.3 million international debut — the highest opening ever for an R-rated film and the second best for Universal after Fast & Furious 6 ($160.3 million). That would put Fifty Shades' global launch at just shy of $240 million.

Domestically, the film adaptation of EL James' S&M-laced romance novel will easily best the $63.1 million launch of Valentine's Day in 2010 to tie up the best showing of all time for the holiday. Universal is playing it safe and estimating $76.1 million for the four days, although other box office pundits believe Fifty Shades could land north of $80 million, thanks to what's expected to be a huge turnout on Valentine's Day.

Bad movies make money all the time, so no bones about that, but lord, as if EL James' needs more validation of her shitty writing.

My silver lining is that now that studios know that the horny woman market is a rainmaker, they'll start buying the rights to erotic literature that is actually good.

And yeah, as if EL James needed something to make her ego even bigger. Maybe the vast majority of the reviews (both critics and viewers) being scathing will take her down a few pegs.

And yes, they are aware that this is just book one in a series of three, but they don't mention it until the end. It is an interesting read to consider the film and what is says as a stand alone work in terms of class and wealth.

I was wondering what was the big change in the ending compared to the books? From what I have read, it is the same shit where Ana is horrified at exactly how far he wants to go and runs out his place. From the spoilers I have read, sounds like the same thing happens here.
