Just felt I had to say that I don't own an actual TV, but I freely stream shows and movies on my large (22") computer monitor. Shailene? Yep, said it to be smug.

Not watching TV is fine. Mr. Rio didn't have a TV for 13 years before we got married, and now he just watches a couple of things that we watch as a family, but he doesn't make arrogant personal remarks about it. Ok, he doesn't make personal remarks about it that are *so* arrogant. Also, he's not making boatloads of money from being on TV. It seems like she could have said something more gracious like, "I don't watch much because since it's my job it's not relaxing for me," or maybe just sacrificed a few precious hours and binged something she could mention. It's just unseemly to say what she said at the Emmy's.

When the topic comes up, these people usually just shrug and say, "I don't really watch TV." and leave it at that. But Shailene (and others) say it with a tone that implies, "I'm making a better, healthier choice than you."

It's competitive lifestyling. It's so annoying. You win, okay? I'm not even playing.

It's the fact that she was at the Emmys that's the biggest sin, IMO. Read the room, girl. You just looked down your nose at the work of everyone present.

I generally like Shailene But that comment really annoys me. Not just because it is smug and pretentious its ignorant. Acting is her craft - to me part of acting is watching other actors, keeping up with the work that's hot, what writers and directors are up and coming. The actors I've known know all the details about productions that are successful and hot at the moment. It's part of you craft imo

I have 3 TVs!
Do any of you remember the 80s bumper stickers that said, "Kill Your Television"? I used to joke about bending them back upon themselves so it would read "Kiss Your Television."
TV was the only thing that got me through my childhood in Nowheresville, Wisconsin. Also I am now a college professor. For real! A story is a story. Reading may spark different parts of our brains associated with language, but we all like stories because they are comforting to us.
Also, didn't that annoying Blossom actor say the same thing (the one on the misogynist terrible Nerds show, the Big Bang Theory), that she didn't let her kids watch TV and didn't own one?

Sort off topic, but Jim Gaffigan says in one of his stand ups that when people say to him "oh I don't eat McDonald's" that he says "yea, I know you don't ......because you're a DICK!!"

Anyone else old enough to remember when people said, "I only watch PBS," instead of "I don't watch TV,"?

I once participated in a graduate student's study about television watching habits. She was asking me questions, and I kept going on about how little TV I watch and how I wouldn't even miss it if it were gone. Then she asked me to count how many TV's are in my home. The answer was 7.
