My favorite CIS episode is Mike Danton. Abusive childhood, predatory creep coach/manager, a name change, sent his teenage girlfriend to hire a hitman and she accidentally hires a dude who works for the cops, mental illness. ETA: They did last week's topic, Aqib Talib, too soon. Cops hunt for Yaqub Talib, ex NFL star Aqib Talib's brother

ETA: They did last week's topic, Aqib Talib, too soon. Cops hunt for Yaqub Talib, ex NFL star Aqib Talib's brotherI just re-listened to that one, it's so disgusting how many adults violated this poor boy/young man, no wonder his life spun out of control. The Jennifer Capriati is very depressing for a child to handle that much, but I hope she's in a more stable place now. The episode that's uplifting is on basketball's Caron Butler, it's so worth listening. I re-listened to the episode on Bruno Fernandes De Souza, but was incensed that they called the victim (her murder was gruesome, listener discretion is advised) a "whore" because she did porn; it was so slut-shaming and gross, I really hated that. Fortunately, the two guys seem to be better at that, so I'll just chalk that up to their neophyte status to podcasting. ETA: New episode on rugby's John Hopoate just dropped today! I'm surprised he didn't get criminal charges for what he did!

For those still following the Adnan Syed case, some good news for Adnan. Prosecutors are saying his conviction should be overturned and he should get a new trial. In the meantime, they say he should be released on his own recognizance.
It is still up to a judge to agree, but they have a pretty compelling case that is absolutely infuriating.
- One thing is DNA. They’ve got DNA for two other suspects, taken from scrapings under Hae’s nails and her shirt. The thing is, they did test this DNA back in the day, but the first samples they tested were inconclusive, so they didn’t bother to test the other samples.
- This one is the real kicker. The state knew about another suspect who had motive to kill Hae, and threatened to kill her in front of another witness. This is the sort of thing you aren’t allowed to hide from the defense, but they did in a total Brady violation.
Considering those factors plus it is the prosecution and not the defense bringing this to light, unless the judge has some weird issue, Adnan should be released.

There's a good Tik Tok account--RobandHaley--that really broke down all the reasons the prosecutors are saying the conviction should be overturned that I found helpful.
Man, Serial was the first podcast I ever listened to. I'm still not convinced Adnan is innocent, but the trial was a travesty, for sure.

A new trial sounds like what is needed here. If they find evidence Adnan did it, fine. But the last time around they clearly violated his rights by holding back evidence/knowledge of two other suspects, one of whom a witness saw/heard threaten to kill Hae, and one (maybe the same?) is related to the person who owned the lot where Hae’s car was found.
I fall on the side that he’s innocent, because no evidence that points towards him hasn’t fallen apart. First, there’s Jay’s testimony, and that whole thing is a mess and may have been coerced by the cops (one of whom has been sued several times for his shoddy/corrupt police work). Second, the cell phone data, which we now know from the fax cover sheet AT&T said should not have been used for locating someone, and the engineer who originally testified against Adnan has done a 180 and said he never would have done so if he had all the info.
The only thing that stuck out to me that was fishy was at the time Jay and Adnan told the police they barely knew each other, yet Adnan let Jay borrow his car. That always smelled like bullshit to me and the one thing I couldn’t explain away. But then Rabia revealed in her book that Adnan and Jay had a deal where Adnan would let Jay borrow his car to sell drugs, and in return Adnan got a cut of the profits. That made sense and would explain why a couple of teenagers might lie about it.

That helped podcasting take off. I remember some journalists tweeting about it, and then I discovered it.

Adnan's conviction was vacated! I hope he has a really strong support system around him. I couldn't imagine how crazy it would be to get used to life on the outside as a kind of podcast celebrity.
Edit: Apparently this doesn't mean he's getting out. The prosecutor may re-file.
