Watching commercials now. Second attempt. Was gonna be forced to watch the pixels in the front row at 3:20, so we moved to the 3:40 show. Against the wall, but at least we are 50 ft from the screen...
ETA:...JJ For the feckin' WIN!
Favorite for me? The big, beautiful yellow Kodak logo at the end if the credits! JJ told George "I'll never shoot film again!" Lucas to suck it, and shot in 65mm!

Finally saw this! Man it was awesome to see all the callbacks and the classic Star Wars motifs - the music, the title crawl, everything. They did a great job of reincarnating the original flavor triad while still mixing it up. I loved Isaac, Boyega and Ridley. Man, Oscar Isaac sure is dreamy, and so charismatic. His bromance with Boyega's character was one of the highlights of the movie. And John Boyega was AWESOME. He was a straight up joy to watch, and played SO well off of everyone he interacted with - when I find myself thinking "I could watch a whole movie of this guy just hanging out with Han Solo", you know you've got a great character/performance on your hands. Rey was excellent as well - she really looked like she could whoop some ass. You can also put me in the "weirdly attracted to Adam Driver" camp.... I wasn't 100% sold on his acting but I thought his physicality while be-masked was good, very distinctive. My spoilers never come through without needing to be highlighted so... << {Spoiler}I was torn on Kylo Ren's "whiny" qualities - I liked that he was an ambiguous villain, not full Vader yet. Thinking about it, he's one of the characters I'm most curious about in the upcoming installments, so I guess he/JJ did their job right. I thought his best work was opposite Daisy Ridley - the two of them had a really interesting chemistry (I don't mean that in a "I want them to get together" sense, but in a "hinting at some interesting backstory/characterization" sense). >>

I thought Adam Driver did a great job with the role, because I realized {Spoiler}as Kylo Ren was lying injured after his battle with Rey that I wanted him to live, despite having killed Han Solo (you bastard!). He's a villain I want to see more of. I like that he's obviously still young and tempestuous and there's the potential to give him a really good back story in a future film. I think he has the gravitas when he's wearing the helmet, but when it comes off, he starts to question and doubt what he's doing. He needs the helmet to hide behind, in a way. The dialogue was much better in this film and felt more natural and allowed for additional subtle humor that I really enjoyed. I thought they did a great job with the film. Obviously, there's a lot of reworking of the original trilogy, but I thought it was done well. I loved it!

The one thing missing at the beginning was the 20th Century Fox sign. So are there books out there explaining the 30 year gap? Kinda weird to suddenly be dropped into the story with Luke missing and the Solo family feud.
For all the media hype surrounding Captain Phasma, she's in what...4 scenes? I'm assuming she's in the next one?

Keanu Reeves actually shot a documentary on film vs. digital called "Side by Side" in which he talks to directors such as George Lucas about why they prefer one medium to another.

I watched that last week. It made me really sad, and annoyed at Lucas. That was one reason I was so elated to see that "Force Awakens" was shot on film. In fact, the bit in the doc where they explain color timing is how I knew what the Fotokem credit meant.

I was hoping she'd made it out of whatever garbage chute they put her down.

I've seen it three times now. Holds up every time. I adore Rey.

Finally saw it! I can't deal with huge crowds, so I figured going today in the afternoon would be a good bet. My thoughts (spoilers are hidden): *A darkened movie theater is a strange place to be cutting onions, but that's got to be what the guy beside me was doing considering how my eyes were watering during the first chords of the theme and the opening crawl. Yeah, that's what it was. *This movie was AWESOME! Now THIS is some gott-damn Star Wars, people! George Lucas will be forever lionized for giving us the franchise in the first place, but the difference in quality between TFA and the prequels just hammers home how badly he needed to hand the reins over to someone else. JJ Abrahms was a good choice. *Not enough Captain Phasma! << {Spoiler}Though from what I understand her role is a lot bigger in subsequent movies, so I guess she gets out of that garbage chute. >> *I hope they have big plans for Kylo Ren in the future, because right now << {Spoiler}he's just a big damn punk to me. I may just be a little pissed off that he killed Han, though. >> *Speaking of that, {Spoiler}<<I'd heard before that a major character would die and I shouldn't be surprised that it was Han. With all of Harrison Ford's talk in the past about how he was done with the franchise, he probably only agreed to do this one if it would be the only one. Still, it hurts. Han Solo was a kick ass character, not to mention my major crush from when I was a kid. Losing him was hard. I actually yelled "you asshole!" at Kylo Ren during that scene. >> *There's so much more to unpack, but I'll end with this: did the people complaining about the lack of good female characters and the movie not passing the Bechdel Test see a different movie than I did or are they trying way too hard to find something to be pissed about? Maz Kanata and Leia were both awesome and {Spoiler}Spoiler <<Rey is shaping up to be the major hero of the story.>> Captain Phasma didn't have much to do in this movie, though, but that will change. Not to mention there were a few female Resistance pilots, Imperial officers and Stormtroopers. Not many, but still way more than the original trilogy. *Oh, one last thing. << {Spoiler}Supreme Leader Snoke is a really goofy name, IMO, so I'm calling him Darth Voldemort from now on. Or Darth Gollum to work the Andy Serkis angle. {Spoiler}Spoiler >>
