I honestly think one of my favorite parts was when Rey and Fin were excitedly comparing notes after doing some cool stuff. THAT was what was missing from the last trilogy - that sense of wonder and excitement.
Oh, and I died at the "... do you have a boyfriend? A cute boyfriend?" line.

Along the same lines, I loved how excited Poe and Finn were when Finn managed to shoot out the canons (or whatever they were) on the Star Destroyer. They were totally bro-ing out and it was awesome.

I'll end with this: did the people complaining about the lack of good female characters and the movie not passing the Bechdel Test see a different movie than I did or are they trying way too hard to find something to be pissed about? Maz Kanata and Leia were both awesome. I'm going to spoilerize my reply because I don't want to pollute everyone's happiness with my grumpy cat: {Spoiler}I haven't read any reviews, and I've said elsewhere I'm not a SW fan. I actually did think about the Bechdel test during the film before I knew anyone else was talking about it, which I shouldn't have been surprised by.
My opinion is: The women are strong, interesting characters, but to me, a lot of their strength and interest comes from either stuff they have no control over (being a princess, being an orphan, being super old), or being strong in many cases where they don't really have any choices except to die (but that sword fight was pretty cool). In this film, a lot of the "strong woman" elements seemed to trade on pointing out that the Strong Woman is A Woman, like when C3PO slipped and said, "princess." Maybe that's some elaborate joke for fans I don't get, but that's how I read it. It's not especially complex or interesting for me, and it comes back to my disinterest in the SW universe in the first place--everyone is either a princess or a warrior, and that is fundamentally not gripping to me. Oh wait, that other lady was a nurse.
So the tl;dr version is that I think the characters are indeed strong, brave women, but it's kind of conditional and it doesn't resonate with me. I liked the complexities presented in General Organa's perspective. And I really do think the fans saw a very different movie than other people did, but that's okay. The concept has permeated a popular culture and even I felt some stirrings of onion gas when I saw {Spoiler}broken down R2D2 I'm honestly glad the fans are happy. I would probably watch another one. I liked emo Kylo Ren because, unlike some other characters, he seemed to make choices and not just bloom into predestination.

chonies: I get what you're saying, but I'm going to wait and see. Spoilers ahead: << {Spoiler}I really hope TPTB don't squander what they've set up in the first movie with regards to the major female characters. If you think about it, the male characters in the original trilogy didn't get the kind of development that the female characters in this one might have coming (full disclosure: I'm thinking WAY ahead right now based on what I've seen so far). Both Han and Lando Calrissian kind of went from a selfish rogue (Han) and cutthroat businessman who would throw friends under the bus to keep the peace with the Empire (Lando) to Designated Hero in about 20 minutes in a single movie without much in-between development. I think only Darth Vader got a few moments of struggling with the Dark Side and the Light before ultimately landing on Redemption Equals Death.
If the writers are doing their jobs right, and so far it looks like they are, we may get to see Rey struggle with succumbing to the Dark Side with the audience not knowing where she'll land until she makes her choice, Leia becoming a ruthless General Ripper out of grief and struggling with that or Captain Phasma getting captured by the Resistance and beginning to doubt her blind devotion to the First Order because the heroes treat her better than the baddies ever did. As for Maz Kanata, they're clearly setting her up to be the Yoda figure (really old, tiny alien, knows loads about the Force), so she'll probably continue to be the Big Good like Yoda was. >> Right now, I'll wait and see. If the writers fall back on the same old tropes I'll still enjoy it because STAR WARS! but my enjoyment of it will be even better if they develop characters without regard to gender. As for Kylo Ren, I think he's a punk right now, but that's just because of what he did. I'll probably come around to him once that hurt dies down. I'll give him a chance.

Finally saw it today. I've been trying to see it for days, but it's either sold out, or I've been too busy. Saw a matinee with a fullish theatre with some families, some fan-boys (one in a too tight tee-shirt was particularly startling), and a random array of folks. I really liked it. I didn't Machete order the original trilogy and prequels, but I had a pretty good understanding of what was what, and who was whom. I really liked all the Rey and Finn bits. They were both excellent, and great to lead the future of the series. I was glad to see the usual tropes subverted. Rey was no damsel in distress, and her multiple Jedi level abilities didn't have me rolling my eyes. I liked that Finn was the emotional heart of the story. I hope we see more of where the new Storm Troopers come from in the coming films. Harrison and Carrie were fine in their roles. Kylo Ren was fine as a villain. I have to say that Adam Driver...is just...not...a handsome person. The first time he pulled off the helmet, I gasped, and mentally begged him to put it back on. The helmet with the distorted voice was more effective in making him threatening as well. Next film, and going forward, helmet on at all tiimes. [/shallow] Can't wait for the sequel, and may even see this one again in theaters. The plane fights were amazing. The first 3 were super exciting, but I thought the last one where they blew up the mega weapon, went on too long, and was not as crisp and exciting as the other fights. As for the ending...meh. I want to see more Finn/Rey adventures. I know that that guy is a big deal, but I'm more interested in Finn and Rey's backstories. Overall score: B+ Favorite scene? Tie between BB-8 giving Finn the thumbs up, and the 2 Storm Troopers backing out when Kylo was having his tantrum. ETA: Almost forgot, loved the Storm Troopers new armor with the one red shoulder pad.

BB-8 was my favorite, Finn and Rey really captured everything a Star Wars hero should embody and Poe's hair was want to run my fingers through perfect.

A friend of mine swears that BB-8 was actually flipping off Finn, not giving him a thumbs-up. I think that makes it even funnier.

Haha, I totally thought it was a flip-off too! Funny either way.
