I think someone with a little more grit than "that nice young man" Ron Howard would have been better for a Mostly good scoundrel like Han Solo. There were parts of the film that harkened back to his character, without really acknowledging it.
I mostly enjoyed it, but I was just a tad bored for some reason. I just don't get Emilia Clarke as an actress or a beauty, and some parts just seem too convenient.
Alden did try, but he's just missing the MOVIE STAH!!! charisma of Harrison Ford. Donald Glover, OTOH, was full of that charisma and totally felt like he would grow into Billy Dee Williams. ( I won't be surprised if THAT ends up the spin off spin off of this movie.)
It was "fine", but it just felt missing some swagger and verve that, say, Doug Liman or Quentin Tarentino or Scorcese or Oliver Stone or (imagine!) Paul Schrader would have given to the character.

I went in with low expectations, and ended up really enjoying it. Was that Tilda Swinton voicing L-3? I thought Alden, especially with how much he'd been trashed leading up to the movie, did a really good job in a really difficult part. I'm not sure he's lacking in charisma, more he's lacking in THIS charisma. But damn if Donald Glover didn't play Lando perfectly. He had the voice down, and the "I hate you exchange" was hilarious.

People are pissed off about TLJ and I understand that, I would rather watch all those stupid galactic senate meetings in the prequels than watch TLJ again, but people need to just let that go. Solo is a simple fun Star Wars movie.

L3 was played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

I dunno if TLJ has as much to do with Solo tanking at the box office it as it's haters want to believe. My boyfriend (uber SW fan) and I both loved TLJ but have no desire to see Solo. Even before casting was announced we were both like "what's the point?". Everything you need to know about the character you know in his first few scenes in A New Hope. Plus Harrison Ford - one of the biggest, most iconic movie stars of the last several decades. After Solo was announced, Force Awakens was released and reminded everyone just how much they loved Harrison Ford as Han Solo.
My guess is it's a case of making a movie with a story for which there was no demand so audiences were skeptical from the beginning. The troubled production and questionable casting of Ehrenreich didn't help. And unlike with The Dark Knight where fans were initially down on Heath Ledger being cast as the Joker, but quickly intrigued when early stills and teasers were released, what little Disney released from Solo production did nothing to convince skeptics otherwise. Audiences probably would've shown up had Ehrenreich shown any promise in early footage or the rest of the story seemed interesting. Instead it's just meh.

I mentioned earlier that TLJ dampened my enthusiasm. But if this had been an Obi-Wan movie with Ewan MacGregor my butt would've been in a theater seat. So it's not that I'm angrily rejecting anything and everything Star Wars. It's more like, why should I care about a Harrison Ford-less Han Solo movie enough to spend $12? If TLJ had really kicked ass (for me) I'd probably give more benefit of the doubt, the way Marvel earned enough benefit of the doubt that I was willing to take a chance on Guardians of the Galaxy.

Yeah, for every person like you, there's one like me. The common theme seems to be "skeptical of Harrison Ford-less Han Solo movie".

A friend of mine and I were discussing that we would love to see (though casting would be impossible) a Leia movie--ie, how did a rich, privileged Princess come to be such a badass? Or a Lando film, because clearly the man has an interesting story. We've seen the space opera, we've seen the Empire and First Order rise and fall. We could guess how Solo became Solo, but if you're going to give me a prequel, that was the one I wanted.
I don't get the hatred for TLJ. I didn't love it as much as I loved the first film in this trilogy, but I thought it was interesting and again--gave us peeks at life in the galaxy outside of the spaceships.

Kelly Marie Tran(AKA Rose) had to delete her IG because of abusive racist comments. I was meh on the TLJ, but I don't lose my shit over it. She just tried out for a part, she wasn't trying to make a SJW statement.

She just tried out for a part, she wasn't trying to make a SJW statement. And the hater boys are attacking Rian Johnson on Twitter (again) in response to his tweets about awful SW fans. It. Is. Just. A. Movie. Like it or dislike it as much as you want, and have as many spirited (but civil) discussions as you want. Attacking the people who made it on social media? Is a dick move. I was watching some of the behind the scenes stuff on the TLJ Blu-ray, most of which was recorded before the movie came out. Listening to RJ on the audio commentary and in other videos sounding all hopeful about how the movie would be received made me sad. Dude had no idea what was coming.
