Yeah, I think the Toby-in-bed-alone-omg-is-Kate-dead scene was a misdirect. I don't really have a strong vibe of who "she" is, but I don't think it's Kate. I really liked last night's episode, especially when Kate told Randall that him flying across the country to see her was "the most Dad thing ever." Randall truly does embody the most Jack traits of all the Big Three. Also, I chuckled at Jack's mom insisting on stopping for a coffee cake because she "couldn't show up empty-handed" and then Rebecca echoing that sentiment to Jack. Such a nice old school touch. Are we not doing this anymore? I still do this. Could I be blowing all that money on Starbucks?

Do we think Kate died due to IVF or some such? (I've been thinking about this because they've had so. many. people. talk about the dangers of it for her. It feels like an anvil.) I don't think they can kill her off this early in the show. We've already got Jack and William in deadvision, I don't think they can sustain it with one of the triplets. There's too much for them to unpack together in this world. I'm loving the show again this season, but I don't like Zoe, and I really don't like Zoe with Kevin. I feel like Sophie was his lobster. Toby is wearing on me less than he did before. "I'm a heroin addict!" That was gold. Yeah, didn't think they'd kill her off ASAP, or anything, but maybe down the road a piece. (I also didn't think they'd do the egg harvesting so soon. I'm behind since I watch it on Hulu and don't have any of the following week previews.) But they could drag out infertility complications and side effects for seasons. (Maybe SHE gets pregnant with triplets and dies from some dramatic blood clot during childbirth or years later. "We told her she shouldn't have done that!" I wouldn't put it past this show. haha.) Alan was Silas from Weeds!

I watch on Hulu too. I

My mother will always bring something and that's been passed down to me. But, for example, my cousin and his wife? Invited to my parents all the time and have never brought anything. Her parents were invited a few times and they too, never brought anything.

I think my hatred for it has increased in the same amount that my hatred for Toby has decreased. This is indicative of positive personal growth, I think. It is more acceptable to hate a fictional character's hair than to hate a cloying fictional character.

Damn, y'all. I didn't catch this: Toby wasn't wearing his wedding ring in the flash forward!

I wasn't too interested in this Jack-only episode, it felt too disconnected from the usual show and I missed the other characters.
The most interesting/depressing part was watching the birthday lottery, especially when they showed that Jack's brother was almost born after midnight and that little detail may have meant that his number didn't get called. How scary to be a young guy at that time and to have to fear that arbitrary number popping up.

I was really pleased to see that Tim O'Brien was credited as a co-writer for this episode. He wrote one of the best books on the Vietnam War, The Things They Carried.

I have zero interest in a Vietnam War plot line, especially if it's going to be the only thing they show. Yeah, yeah, Jack had a disinterested father (as did half the kids growing up in the good ol' days), and he feels responsible for his brother. And I assume, his brother's death.
I did think that scene in the hospital maternity nursery was powerful. with all the babies born on Oct. 18. Yeah, all you little boys got sent to a doomed war, lucky you.
