What I want to know is why she and Mel Gibson are such good buddies. I know they worked together but I can't imagine a more unlikely pair of friends.

I also agree that she is definitely (IMO) not snark-worthy...she has such a low-key life (for a celebrity) and she only does what she needs to do to promote her films, and then it's back to a relatively quiet, un-famewhorish life. Love her.

I agree with the theory that the press doesn't talk about Jodie's personal life because she doesn't talk about her personal life. Another thing in her favor is that she is very gracious to the media. She gives interviews, allows herself to be photographed and always comes across as very professional. I think it would be a different story if she did pull stupid publicity stunts like smooching Colin Farrell (or whoever) or if she behaved like Cameron Diaz and bitched at and about the press all the time.

That reminds me of a quote from David Hyde Pierce, who said "My life is an open book, but that doesn't mean I'm going to read it to you." I think she's just living her life, but she isn't going to put it on display.
She is completely awesome and I, like others have said here, wish more celebs would follow suit and learn that you can be an actor without giving the details of your love life on Oprah or making sure that you appear in In Touch at least once a month.

A&E aired her "Biography", and even though she has won two Oscars ("The Accused" and "Silence of the Lambs"), and nominated 4 times, in her interviews she still appears to be a humble and down-to-earth person.
I really admire her.

I really admire her too - I wonder how she's stayed so humble and real and others don't - I guess it's a matter of character. She rocks though.

I think it would be a different story if she did pull stupid publicity stunts like smooching Colin Farrell (or whoever) or if she behaved like Cameron Diaz and bitched at and about the press all the time. I totally agree that this is the reason she's never been "outed" by the press. The celebs who tend to have all their secrets revealed by the tabloids are the ones who whore out every aspect of their personal lives when it's convenient to them, and when they stand to gain something by it, and then suddenly want privacy when it does not benefit them. To me, Kathie Lee Gifford is the perfect example of the opposite of the Jodie Foster model. The woman spent years droning on and on to anyone who would listen (and many who would not) about her perfect life with her perfect family. She invited the critique of her family in by doing that, and then wanted to be left alone right away when it no longer benefitted her to boast about her family. If you issue a press release every time you go on a date, get engaged, get married, have a baby, etc, then you invite the attention to every aspect of your life. Jodie Foster does not do this. SHe only issues press releases that are directly related to her acting and/or directing work, and therefore, she only invites attention to these aspects of her life. I missed ITAS - what did she say about Hinckley?

anne, it was during the end segment where the students in the audience get to ask the guest questions. A student asked Jodie about a play she had appeared in during her time at Yale, and whether Jodie wasnted to be onstage again. Jodie replied that it was just about the time the play was ready to open that Hinckley shot Reagan. The subsequent responses - huge amounts of attention on Jodie, security searches of audience members before the play began - made Jodie reluctant to appear onstage again. It wasn't the idea of acting without being able to do multiple takes as in film; it was all the attendant negative circumstances that made it difficult for Jodie.

And she manages to avoid Tom Cruise-style hysteria about it too. I think that no one cares because she's so calm about it. God knows there's stuff she could discuss, including John Hinckley. She did write something back in, I think, 1982 on it, but that's all. OTOH, what happened would put a lot of people off the madly-seeking-public-attention track.
