I have a Hallmark-ish movie on my DVR called A Very British Christmas that I'm so freaking excited about!

I've been watching the Hallmark and Lifetime holiday movies the past few weeks, and I'm ready happy to say, they've really improved on their diversity. I mean, sure, anything is an improvement when you had no diversity to speak of, but they're kind of all in right now. I watched a movie a few weeks ago with a caucasian female lead and an african american male lead. AND! He's divorced in the movie! There was another movie that had it switched, the female lead was african american (she honestly looked mixed) and the male lead was caucasian. They've had an Asian female lead which has been my favorite story so far of all the movies I've watched. I think a Lifetime movie I watched had gay partners as part of the second leads. They've had more divorced parents on, which is a breath of fresh air from the normal "dead partner" storyline.

I watched a really sweet Christmas Movie on LifeTime with an African American Couple as the leads. I wish I could remember the name of it because I really liked it. They were next-door neighbors who grew up together. And of course, they fall in love, but neither one has the courage to tell the other - typical fair. But the diversity was lovely to see.

Hallmark started their Holiday movies this past Friday. I already have a favorite movie, Boyfriends of Christmas Past. The main male lead, Nate, is super hot. Yes, I'm allowing myself to be superficial.
This story was a bit more believable than previous movies. At least the main characters here were best friends.

I've been immersing myself in Hallmark Christmas movies for the past week. I think I just need some happy endings. I've already got 48 movies saved on the DVR - that does not bode well lol

I am also unashamedly rearranging Thanksgiving obligations to be home for the premiere of The Nine Kittens of Christmas! I saw a headline somewhere that Danica McKeller is leaving Hallmark for GAC Media, whatever that is. Good riddance, I say, because I think her acting sucks.

GAC Media is helmed by former Hallmark CEO Bill Abbott, who was fired from Hallmark after their conservative fan base went nuts over an ad featuring two women getting married. He pulled the ad, non-conservative fans went nuts, then brought the ad back, thus reigniting the conservative fans. It was a whole thing. That combined with Hallmark's woeful record on diversity meant he was toast.
Danica is the latest in a long line of former Hallmark stars that have been poached from the network, almost certainly due to their closeness with Abbott. I can't decide how I feel about this. Hallmark is a mess behind the scenes, the new CEO is not doing well, but the channel has been featuring more movies with a greater diversity of leads and even some LGBTQ characters. So she's leaving a dysfunctional network that is trying to do the right thing to go to a network that is probably more stable but that is going to keep up with the old Hallmark formula -- i.e., if you're not white and straight, you're not welcome. Oh, and I'm sure it'll mean more roles for her, since Hallmark under Abbott had a grand total of like five actresses who were in every movie ever, Danica being one of them. It's probably good from a career point of view but bad from a human point of view.
Topic? Best Christmas movie of all time for me is The Nine Lives of Christmas. It has Brandon Routh in it, remember him? It's from 2015 and it's adorable.

Thank you for the backstory, ximena. So GAC is basically the One America News Network of holiday schmaltz? It sounds dreadful and does not improve my opinion of Danica at all.

Yeah the network hasn't existed for long enough for there to be any record on diversity so I could be wrong about this, but given why Abbott was fired and the fact that Hallmark is bleeding ultra-conservative viewers who are looking for a lily white safe space, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the direction it goes. If Abbott gets Candace Cameron Burre to switch allegiances, that'll be the ultimate coup. That woman IS Hallmark.
