Not to get morbid, but they have said that typically bodies take 7-10 days to float up if they don't find them during their searches. The water is incredibly sooty and you can only see maybe 5-6 INCHES. It's really a shitty lake to go to for swimming, IMO.
I think most people think life vests are lame, but not too lame for kids (which is one good thing out of this). I just think that you have to be so careful when you're doing something that has a huge risk and you're all alone with your 4-year-old child.

This is all so heartbreaking. I know that it is very dangerous to swim behind a boat with the motor running because of the carbon dioxide released. Maybe something along the lines of this happened and she succumbed to it and the son somehow how survived and fell into a deep sleep. I guess I'm just throwing a possibility out because it is so senseless. I keep thinking about that sweet little boy. Bless his heart.

Man, this place sounds pretty awful for swimmers in general. At least a dozen ( listed here) drownings and all with the same problem: currents, winds, whirlpools -- even with life jackets, some couldn't survive. That place would freak me out to even go on a pontoon and not swimming -- people would go with large groups and STILL drown. I'm just so surprised she'd go there with just her little boy. I hope that this doesn't define him and he's able to heal from the terrible tragedy and lead a life of love and peace with his father and family.

I saw photos of her little boy with his father yesterday and he was smiling away for the cameras. He just looked so sweet and innocent, it broke my heart. I hope he didn't see her struggle and just thought she was still swimming.

The coverage has shown just how large and treacherous that lake is. But if she went there often, she likely had a false sense of security. That said, she could have gotten ill, weak, a cramp, or injured in a completely placid part, with the same outcome due to the lack of flotation device.
So fortunate her son didn't go looking for her.

Last night I was thinking that same thing: there could be so many things, so many factors that could have impacted the circumstances and we will never know. What if, as you said, she had a paralizing cramp while she was in the water? What if she had an aneurysm? (I have a good friend who had one, completely unexpected, that nobody saw coming, while she was in the shower. Now imagine that happening when you are swimming. My point is that we really have no idea what caused whatever it is that happened. But it hapenned, and it led to this. My heart breaks for the child; I hope he truly gets all the support in the world to deal with this certain-to-be-life-changing tragedy.

As others have said, we'll never know, but it was probably something as tragic as a false sense of "I've been here/done this many times, I know what I'm doing." That is not shade to her, we ALL do things like that and 99% of the time, things turn out fine. Sadly, not this time.

It's very tragic. I know a woman who had an aneurysm while driving and her young teen daughter had to take control of the car. The mom died almost instantly, barely in her 40s. So it can happen.

Sheriff is saying they were both swimming back to the boat but her son made it and she never did. So sad, if she had just worn the life jacket she would likely be alive. But how did she not make it? They were in the lake so there wasn't a huge wave that hit or anything. Maybe she had a seizure or something that immobilized her?

When I first heard this story, I was picturing a small lake and a small boat. But seeing the coverage, it was an eye opener. The video of them searching in the water made me realize how hard it might be to find her body.
I have been out on a pontoon boat in a big lake and we’ve all gone swimming, no life jackets. So much fun. I will certainly take it more carefully in the future.
As someone said, thank goodness her little boy didn't try to go in after her.
