It was Viola's 2nd nom. Her first for Best Actress, and like twodollars & I have said, probably her last. That's just the way things go in Hollywood.
And to bring this back to Meryl...that was a nice speech. Wasn't fond of that dress, but that's Meryl's style.

Her dress was supposedly 100% eco friendly. That doesn't mean I thought it looked great, though.
That said, I *heart* her, and only Meryl could give a speech about looking out in the Oscars audience and seeing all her friends and not sound like a complete twat.

I thought dressing like a gold statue was her defense against possibly losing.

The weakness of the movie probably worked against her. I haven't seen "The Iron Lady" but I do like Meryl so I'm happy for her. She has been just about the classiest loser ever (granted, it is easier when you've already won) except for maybe Susan Lucci.

I'm a huge Meryl fan, but the "fuck the haters" bit at the beginning of her speech bothered me. It sounded really bad.

I bet Meryl Streep reads pages like ONTD ;-) How else would she know about her "haters"? Traditional media adores her.
As I said in the Oscar thread, at least the whole "Meryl hasn't won in aaaages" thing is done now and we can all relax. It was more important to the Academy to end her "losing" streak than handing out an Oscar to a black Best Actress winner for a second time in 84 years. And no, I don't think this was about the better performance, it never is.

I think if Viola can get one more even semi-prestigious role, she'll get an apology Oscar. Anyway, though, I adore Meryl and am glad she won.

Well, I thought she deserved the win, and I'd love to hang with her. She's so amazingly normal for her level of stardom. The same husband for over 30 years? A regular body and face? No surgery or tans? She's awesome.
