Yeah, I still think Martha is a class A bitch. Just because Alexis is still whining about shit now doesn't make Martha any less of a lousy mother. The queen of all things holiday should not have made her own child's holidays crap.
And yes, Alexis needs to get to therapy and shut up. I'm sure her baby has already gotten some fantastic stuff from grandma, so shut it already.

I was doing some math--I don't know exactly when Alexis is claiming that Martha ruined her Halloween, but if she was elementary school age, that would have been mid to early 70s, and I think Martha was a stockbroker then, and had not started her lifestyle-empire domination yet. So, like a lot of working moms, she might have just been too tired for Halloween. Martha's current Halloween celebration seems like it was decades in the making, as is her current holiday-queen persona. She started as a gourmet food caterer, and then had a long career evolution. I can totally see Alexis's Mom Martha being radically different from today's Martha, in part because Alexis is 46.
Or not. Or maybe Alexis was grounded for Halloween. Or ...I don't know.

Ha! I'm glad she wasn't my mom (other than the never having to work a day in my life thing) but, yeah, I'll probably be a perma-fan, too. I just can't quit you, Martha!

You guys keep saying "class A bitch" like it's a BAD thing.... Hey, I still watch her show everyday (and "Martha Bakes" - that's awesome), so it must be a term of endearment (sort of).  I'm a holiday freak, which is probably why this bugs me. I've worked, had no money, have been tired, etc., etc. ... and my kids always had fantastic holidays. Of course that's probably because my own mom was Martha-ish on this subject. One year I got ice skates for Christmas - and nothing else. And I could not skate. And there was nowhere to skate. And mom didn't try to find me anywhere to skate. But you gotta get past it, Alexis. I don't bring it up STILL (except now!). |

Perhaps Andy Stewart could have helped with wrapping the gifts or with Halloween, so that Alexis would not have had to suffer so. As Dwan mentioned, there are no stories of Alexis being hurt, threatened, or abused, so perhaps it is time for her to get back into therapy and recognise that we all have issues with our parents. From what I have read, Alexis has not accomplished much on her own two feet. Children (and society) demand way too much from mothers. There is such a double standard when it comes to what is expected of working mothers and working fathers, or in Martha's case an empire-building mother. I think perhaps I have been living in Eastern Europe too long and teaching/working on gender issues here too long because I cannot manage any sympathy for Alexis on the holiday shit. There are people who experience real trauma and never have the resources to recover. |

Martha Stewart is just so boring that nothing sticks to her. Insider trading, court, jail, being a horrible boss, being a horrible mother. She makes it all so dull that no one cares. She could probably kill and skin puppies live on TV and people would be like "oh that's nice Martha. Yawn"

I also think some of that is because none of us fans are really surprised by stories of her being a bitch. You can just see it. Its so much fun when she has employees on because you can tell which ones are scared shitless of her.
I love her. On my to do list is to attend a taping of her show. Wouldn't invite her to my house and certainly wouldn't invite her to my wedding. But I would love to get a couple drinks in her and shoot the breeze.

The one thing I've noticed that sets a broad spectrum of people off is hypocrisy (or at least inconsistency.) Martha may be all about making a beautiful home but she's never come across publicly as a warm, fuzzy maternal type. She seems like a hard core cold, ambitious, bitch. Alexis's stories, the insider trading scandal, etc all of it fits the image many of us have of her. So when we read this stuff it's not exactly a shocker. It's the difference in how people reacted to Bill Clinton's behavior vs Elliot Spitzer's behavior. |
