That poor baby. If having Martha as your mother produces somebody like Alexis, what does having Alexis as your mother produce?

She seems so cold and angry.

Martha seems like the type that would get a few drinks in her and loosen up a bit. Watching her show she slips in a raunchy joke every now and then. Alexis seems like the type that gets a few drinks in her and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I wonder if she has ever laughed at something not involving another person harming/embarrassing themselves?

Martha seems very reserved, but in a way I think that might be part of her public appeal.

On a personal level, I have no idea how this plays out with her own family though.

I read somewhere that her husband left her for her assistant, and I felt bad for her. It's possible her daughter has issues not just because of Martha. The father may have contributed as well.

Huh. I watched a clip of the daughter. She seems A LOT harsher than Martha. Martha is articulate and sounds calm when she speaks; I'm not sure where the daughter inherited the way she speaks from. Yeah, the daughter is kind of scary. She seems like she needs to see a therapist or something.

I think it might be possible that the daughter is weird all on her own.

I thought she was pretty....until she opened her mouth. Yikes!

Alexis seems really unpleasant, and I'm totally confused by her surrogacy story, too. Is it just me, or did she make it sound like she was knocking up a bunch of surrogates at the same time to increase her odds of getting a baby?

Heck, even sober, Martha was always really funny whenever Conan O'Brien would visit. She was completely in on the joke and those segments really made me like her.

Well, at least I assume she was sober. Either way, it was hilarious.

I read that Martha Stewart and her ex-husband had to send their daughter to therapy for being grumpy!

So I guess she tried it and it still didn't work.

Alexis is self aware enough to know how she comes across, but just doesn't care.

What was it about the '50s? I look at my parents' high school yearbooks, which collectively span the entire decade, and even the freshmen looked middle-aged. Kinda like Stockard Channing in Grease...

I think it's a perceptual illusion, because many (though not all) young people of previous generations tend to keep that same "look" -- bubble hair from the 1950s, Neil Diamond poufs from the 1970s, etc. into their older years, and so younger generations associate the look with being older. Hell, I'm beginning to think pics of 1980s high school students are older than they are, just because of the datedness of their hairstyles, which today people in their 50s are sporting.

Re Alexis: I read in a Martha bio (Martha Stewart: Just Desserts if anyone's interested) that Martha's husband did indeed leave her for an assistant with who he started a second family, and that Martha sort of drove him to it by having affair(s) of her own while working as a stockbroker in the early 70s. Alexis turned against her dad then, had no contact with him or his new family for many years. Don't know if they're in contact now. I think the ex might even be deceased at this point.

In a decorating magazine I once saw a spread of Alexis' post-college pad. It was awful and sterile, completely the opposite of her mms' taste, with concrete composite floors and everything in white. It looked like a medical clinic. Girl has issues.

I watched that Martha: Apprentice show and didn't think Alexis came off that badly. Did anyone else? Maybe I wasn't watching closely enough?

In all fairness, I have a co-worker who's been trying to get pregnant for years without success. I've got to say, the experience has left her a little bitter/angry as well. For my co-worker, it's been a very emotional roller coaster.
