I can't stand her. She's the queen of fake "international aid" PR. She attends conferences on women's issues and says and does absolutely nothing of substance and poses in expensive clothing and is usually completely condescending to the people she's visiting. The hilarious thing is she doesn't get that much media coverage so she's not even bringing attention to important problems. The sad thing is that her husband does even less than her so it makes her look good. They are pathetic.

I've looked and looked but can't find anything but catty people on royal forums drawing negative conclusions from interviews and reading their own takes into photographs. What on earth did this woman do?

I am not sure that what she is doing is much different than what Catherine does. I get that royal patronage helps with publicity and fundraising, but do any of the royals get stuck into the real work?

There's a world of difference IMO. I actually see Mary out doing things, being somewhat knowledgeable about the subjects and charities she's involved with. Kate's development as a royal seems to be on the slow track. She does very little on her own and what she does can be summed up as meet and greet and not getting actively involved in the day to day of her charities. It's all smoke & mirrors. Compared to Camilla, both Mary & Kate are lacking, IMO.

What are the factors that constrain Mary and Catherine, though? Mary is closer to the throne, Catherine is still newish. How much did Diana do before she divorced Charles? I'm not sure I understand how the royalty patronage and PR machines work.

The only royal I truly know of who is knowledgeable, when it comes to her chosen charity and royal appointments that is, is Maxima. They usually revolve around finance, like microcredits, investment & savings for developing nations, as her background is in finance.

One of the issues people have with Mary is that she does a lot of magazines, which can get annoying and seem self-promoting at times. But on the other hand-why not?

I'm not sure I understand how the royalty patronage and PR machines work. Diana was involved with AIDS charities, hospitals, etc prior to her divorce. She was the first royal to touch an AIDS patient. After her marriage ended, she became more involved with the landmine project. As far as royal patronage, it depends on the royal how far they want their involvement to go. Some pay lip service through their PR and others actually work with the governing boards. Nothing is holding Kate back from working more with her charities except Kate & William.
