I do think that Whoopi excused Vick's actions. He committed multiple violent, criminals acts and was tried and convicted of that. She tried to say that his background made it so that he didn't understand he was committing wrongful, criminal acts; therefore, he wasn't mindfully being a criminal. She was trying to remove the criminality (is that a word?) from his actions as though he thought he had a legitimate right to conduct these violent acts against animals, which I feel to be making excuses.

I don't know, maybe it's like when people mention that abused children are more likely to grow up to be abusers themselves. It's not like they're excusing the abuser's actions, but it does serve as an explanation of sorts. Although, I still don't think that Whoopi's explanation is valid simply because I don't think dogfighting is really a part of regional culture in the South. It seems like a bullshit generalization.

Ah, I've found another example that is perfect for this board. It's like saying K-Fed can't help that he spreads his sperm indescrimently because he is Trailer Park Trash --it's his culture.

So tired of hearing it's a cultural thing in the south. Right now I have a home in VA. And since this Vick dog fighting story broke, is the first time I have heard about dogfighting here . I am not from here a NYC gurl I am. But I don't here or read about dog fighting scandals here in VA . This poor black southern thing excuse should stop.
As much as I like Whoppi I don't think it's right to make excuses for Vick or anyone. Who may have done something like this. He knew he was wrong when he did it and he damn sure knows he's wrong now. Is it a pattern for other celeb's to come out and excuse younger celeb's bad behavior ? I see the same thing being done for Paris, Lindsey etc. And now Vick.
Whoppi also must have forgotten that Vick had a 130 million contract and endorsements. So he had plenty of money he wasn't broke ,still living in the "hood" (hardily call Newport News the hood but maybe the part he lived in ) . Whoppi shouldnt' have tried to make excuses or explain Vick's actions. It was wrong in my opinion.

The last publicized case of dogfighting in Surry County involved a white man. It's definitely here and is widespread and I hope Michael Vick spills names (doubtful) but I wouldn't say it's a "black only" cultural thing.

I like Whoopi, but she has to know that it is hard trying to explain another person's actions. I do think this is a case of an explanation and not an excuse. It will appear that you are excusing the actions, when all you are trying to say is, "It is not right, but I understand." Her explanation doesn't make sense to many because many are from the south and would never engage in dog fighting, dog fighting occurs in many regions, dog fighting participants are of many races, and it goes on and on. Her statement was a generalization because we tend to generalize when explaining things. I still like Whoopi.
ETA: I am from Norfolk, VA, born and raised and have always heard of dog fighting. People raise pit bulls for fighting. Some will call themselves breeders, but most people know what the dogs are really for. Others just fight their pet pit bull and see nothing wrong with making their dog fight. All races are involved. I think most people know it is wrong, but I think some are surprised by the level of outrage about this case. I think many look at it as against the law, but not something that police will bother themselves about unless it is a large operation and not something to call the police about if witnessed. There were dog fights in my neighborhood growing up, I wasn't an attendee I just knew they went on, the police were always in my neighborhood, the arrests were never for dog fighting. Drugs, guns, and human fighting, yes. Dog fighting, no. Maybe this case will change things.

Maybe the better question is... how long are we giving The View?? Has this show been relevant for anything but snarking (here, from late night hosts, etc) for years? Ever? I wonder if the whole thing isn't teetering on its last leg right now.

I don't honestly hear about it here. But your right I am sure it exsists. And it's nothing to do with the south, cultural etc like Whoppi stated . Dog fighting is everywhere sadly. And I agree with you I doubt Micheal will "snitch" as some might say. That is a good question. They are desperate to keep those ratings up.
