I wonder though... does the pettiness of these complaints suggest that their marriage was fairly sound, and they've made a big mistake by letting it fall apart? Normally when divorcing couples go public like this you start hearing about spousal abuse, heavy drinking, drugs, wild spending.

They might just be a couple who doesn't love each other anymore, or maybe never did, and just don't want to be together anymore. They just don't make a good couple, but they're okay people.

I think it's easier to try to manufacture "horrific" complaints like making your kids eat spinach or playing backgammon than to say "I don't love them anymore" because then you might get people telling you that's not a good enough reason. A lot of people seem to think unless your spouse beats you or fucks your siblings than you should stay together no matter what. Sometimes you're not just right together.

Maybe it has more to do with the fact that the husband has been the primary caretaker of the kid for the past 5 years and can devote full time care to the kid while Anne works. And the whole Celestia thing too. She wrote an entire book admitting her own craziness, so he had more evidence for the unstable/bad mother claim than just her not making good sandwiches.

I personally hope it's true, only because I get so tired of seeing moms automatically get awarded custody. I have Anne Heche's insane book, and it's highly possible that the kid is better off with Dad than Celestia.

Besides, if it was a guy who dumped his spouse for his costar, the gossip blogger would be up in arms about the cheating scumbag. But in this case, the press is like "Anne and her new boyfriend seem very happy together." Huh? She's crazy!

Considering the dad was the primary caretaker, the mother has a questionable mental history, and the mother's relocated to somewhere that's not even the same country as the family home, I can't say I'm shocked. If we're totally gender-blind, then of course the kid's going to stay with the stable, primary caregiver as long as there's no outstanding issue.
