Ok, the trailers are out for this now and well... [small voice] it doesn't look that bad[/small voice] It looks like what it's supposed to look like which is The Dukes of Hazzard. Even if they got everything wrong by hiring Jessica Simp as Daisy- they got everything right with the General Lee, the police car crack-ups, the population of country hicks and rubes, the frisky nature of Uncle Jesse and most of all the YEEEEEEHHAAAAAAHHHH!!!! I won't actually pay money to see it. Not until it comes out on DVD and even then I'll probably wait til I have a free rental at Blockbuster or something. But [small voice] it really doesn't look too bad[/small voice]

I'm getting the feeling that I'm alone in the universe because I never saw The Dukes of Hazzard. And I had no idea people were so devoted to it. From reading the Jessica Simpson thread I see that people are outraged that she's playing the Daisy Duke part and that this turn of events is an outrage against the memory of Catharine Bach. My question: Who the hell is Catherine Bach? Isn't she/wasn't she kind of a nobody except for that show? I keep hearing her spoken of as practically an icon who is being desecrated.
Here's how out of it I am: It took me forever to deduce that the General Lee is a car.
Well, I guess after this it goes without saying that I'll never bother seeing the movie. I think the Addams Family movies are the only movies I've ever liked that were based on t.v. shows.

I'm getting the feeling that I'm alone in the universe because I never saw The Dukes of Hazzard. The show was huge when I was in kindergarten, but my parents thought it was asinine and refused to let me watch it. I felt so left out at the time, but am very grateful to them now. Jessucka looks nothing like Catherine Bach, who was a tall, leggy brunette. I gather that's the source of the outrage over her casting. Well, that and the fact that she's a no-talent ass-clown. The movie looks pretty lame, but I might rent it on DVD for the randomness of the Willie Nelson/Burt Reynolds/Lynda Carter scenes.

Same here. And this may be the whole of its appeal. For me and my friends (aged 5-11) it seriously rocked our world. The car chases and crashes, those dynamite bows and arrows, the easy to follow plots. Every week you knew you would either have the forclosure of the Duke farm to deal with; a secret stash of Moonshine to run somewhere (in order to save the farm); some interfering Big City slickers to confront (before they could threaten the farm); or Daisy's inevitable kidnapping (and being held for the randsom of the farm). I'm not completely certain it held much interest for anyone out of grade school or not deeply emerced in Nascar Culture. The Catherine Bach thing? I know she was a lot of little boys' first crush (before Princess Leia donned her metal bikini). Plus she was a brunette and smart... well... as smart as Hazzard folk could be. So the idea of Jessica (duh- is this be chicken or tuna me eating?) Simp taking on her role is fairly blasphemous. But the rest of the trailer looks a lot like a typical episode of the show. It's a little more racy than the show was (everybody knew Uncle Jesse was getting it on with all the widows in town- but it was pretty understated. The Duke Boys were total horn dogs, but again, it was all understated). But again, it looks like it should look, with the exception of Daisy. Jessica Simp looks more like the kind of girl who would occasionally stroll into down and mess with either Bo or Luke, or both's heads but would really be out to steal the farm and would have to have her ass good and kicked by Catherine Bach's Daisy. Yes, I am truely sad and ashamed for admitting to my former intense love of this show... but in the trailer, they almost had me at "YE HAH!". I really hate myself sometimes! eta: Oh and another confession. It was a long time before I knew General Lee was anything BUT a car.

Bonsai - you said exactly what I was going to say. I've never seen an ep but nearly every guy I've ever dated and all the ones here at work seem to worship the show.
I thought the trailer looked bad - mostly because of Jessica S. From what little I've seen of her in this movie she seems to have adopted the worse "southern" accent ever. I know she's from somewhere in the South but she sounds awful in the clips I've seen and I don't think she always talks like that.

Jessica is from Texas, not the Deep South, so it's a different accent. And you're right, jynni, her "Daisy" accent sucks ass.
Moldy, I was born in July '75. The first paragraph of GirlyGhoul's last post pretty much sums up the entire series (or what I was able to gather in stolen moments before my mom started watching Dallas, which followed The Dukes of Hazzard on Friday nights).

July, 1978 here. And I was a big fan of the show...really can't stomach much of it now (though I can appreciate it being a mindless show), but where the movie falls short is that it dumbs down already dumb material. The show was nothing but an extended chase scene where Chargers and Plymouth Fury (the true workhorse of Hollywood) got destroyed and flew through the air. The movie on the other hand tries to be some Retarded State version of reality. Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg? Fuck no! Get a fat guy or something close to the original. And CGI? Hire a fucking ramp, how hard is it to employ some stunt men? GAH!
Truer words. I tried catching a few episodes when it was on Spike TV and it's just not that good plotwise. It has its moments but it's really Bubblegum TV that can only be enjoyed if you're five to seven years old and every week revolves around watching He-Man.

My parents also would not let me watch it. So odd. I was born in 76 so I kind of remember the show being on. I remember the little boys in my neighborhood would love it and they'd sing that little "Na na na na na na na na na na na" song when they went around on their big wheels.
I have no desire to see this movie though. Mainly becuase of Jessucka.

Apparently, I am justified in not remembering the original, as a child born in 1981. (Which explains why my mother wanted to name me Dallas -- yeah.). But the trailer got pretty much a non-reaction in the theatre. Not even hoots of appreciation for Jessucka and her lame-ass accent and self-tanner of stupidity. Here's the thing that gets to me. A buddy duo comprised of Seann William Scott and Johnny Knoxville should make for a pretty funny comedy, right? Except in the context of this, where it just seems dumb because they aren't allowed to play to their strengths, as far as I can tell. The movie looks to be completely sans plot as well. I had no idea that the TV show was based on a movie itself -- a remake of a remake, then. Apparently it has caused some legal troubles resulting in a 17 million dollar payoff.

I was born in 1970 The Dukes of Hazzard was a huge event every week in our house for me and my brothers and sisters. I agree with everything Ghirly Goul said. I still call cutoffs Daisy Dukes.
The thing with Daisy is that she was smart and she was the boys Cousin. In the trailer Jessica was flirting with the cousins, I saw the Trailer when I went to The Longest Yard. Daisy would never wear a pink bikini to keep Ennis from finding out Luke and Bo's plan. She would ask him to help her bath a pig or sell fudge at the fair. And man could she kick.
The Ennis actor looks very much like the old Ennis and I really don't mind the new Bo and Luke Duke or Willie as Uncle Jessie.
There is something just kind of off with Boss Hogg being Burt Reynolds. Boss Hogg was such a fat little pretentious man. (At my first job we used to call my first boss that behind his back) I don't think I will see this because I have such good childhood memories of watching that show and discussing it with my friends at shool.
PS I HATE Jessica's Daisy Duke's and Cowboy boots. Actually I just hate her.
