I agree that people traveling great distances are not on the hook for a gift, but perhaps if there's a taste of home (assuming she's American) that she misses, that could be thoughtful.

(I also take the couple's she into account. Wedding gifts were originally intended to set up the young couple. As ppl get older it's more symbolic)
