I thought this would be about cocktails. Carry on. Now I want a cocktails thread. I could use tips on improving my Gin & Tonics Experiment with your gins and your tonics. Sounds trite, but there's such a variety in gins as well as tonics (don't underestimate the tonic flavour!). There are a couple of local distillery gins that I'm quite fond of that blow Sapphire out of the water. There are also craft tonics.

It's true: good gin and tonics start with great basics. Figure out if you prefer dry gins or botanical gins, and look for good tonics. Gin is having its artisanal moment now, so there is probably an enthusiast group near you.
Topic: I love lush's ultrabland.

I am botanical gin girl. I love Hendricks, but some of the local DC gins, such as Green Hat really tickle my fancy (I have a collection of gins now). Honestly, Fever Tree is a fantastic tonic, but super expensive for everyday--Trader Joe's tonic water is a good staple to have. Some days I make a G&T with St. Germaine. It adds a subtle sweetness that works really well.

For G&Ts, I prefer Beefeater's with Schweppe's tonic. But, I love Hendricks in other things, especially a Basil Smash.Use more basil than the recipe calls for. Topic: I walked past the Lush store on the way into the Who concert at Mohegan Sun. It smelled nice.

off topic- what do you use for bitters? I've been putting in some lime zest, but at my mom's place we use actual bitters. I can't decide which I like better,

Depends on the drink--and there's a HUGE variety out there now. Angoustora are a classic for a reason. I say experiment and see what you what you like.
