So, the lead actor looks really hot based on the billboards round town. Plus, from what I've read, the formula seems to be Rome + 300 (I guess the violence is ultrastylized), with promises of lots of full-frontal male and female nudity - not to mention Lucy Lawless's unused merkin and some other fun/crazy elements, as I believe a lot of the original Hercules/Xena team are producers. Premieres tonight at 10 on Starz. And they must be hella confident as it is apparently very expensive to produce but they've already greenlit a second season entitled Spartacus: Vengeance. Oh, John Hannah is also in it.

It's available right now "through alternate channels" and... it looks expensive, too. And there's tons of swears. And skin. And sex. And blood. And boobies. And manbutt. And blood. And swears.

Rome plus 300 plus Xena (even though I am more of a Callisto girl myself) and no network censorship? I know what I am watching tonight!

I read an interview with the exec producer that Spartacus was actually filmed very cheaply, with a total season 1 (13 episodes) budget of about $35 million, compared to Rome's extravagant $100 million.

I thought this was ok. I'll watch for the cast, but it's taking me a minute to get used to the level of artsy gore. I knew I recognized the Commodus-type character (forgetting his name) but he's Haldir from LOTR. He does shifty real well.

Wasn't he the brother in The Mummy, too? I had no idea he was Haldir!

The artsy gore was... Wow. I loved 300, so you would have thought I'd be used to it. Nope.
The artsy sex scenes took me out of it a bit too. I lol at the merkin. I blame you guys.
But the men are pretty, and that's good enough for me.
Haldir (Craig Something) was at Dragon Con last year. Cute, but not a big guy. He's also in Legend of the Seeker as Darken Rahl.

The gore was a bit overdone, but I liked the show even though I wasn't the biggest fan of 300. I certainly can't complain about the eye candy, and I've got my eye on Andy Whitfield. I saw him in an Australian horror flick called Gabriel and thought he was absolutely beautiful.
Thank you! I was racking my brain trying to figure out where I'd seen him before.
You're thinking of John Hanna, who was the one married to Lucy Lawless's character. Haldir was the one who led the Roman army and captured Spartacus and his wife.
