It's lost me too, especially since BRAVO has a ridiculous show on at the same time. I too don't get any of these stories. I mean Margaret was hardly on this season, Richard had a pointless storyline and well, they did get rid of Gillian, hopefully, but what was the point of that?
To me, Richard is the entire show, if he gets killed off next week then I really won't have any reason to watch next season. I'll just watch whatever junk BRAVO has on at that time.
This was explained last season. Lenore's father got into some trouble and Chalky took care of it (meaning he probably killed the guy). Lenore's dad was grateful, so he probably pushed his daughter into marriage with Chalky. That did happen back then, women were used as pawns, so that's possible.
I'll say one thing. I know a lot of people stopped watching when Jimmy was killed (To me they should have ended the series right there). If Richard is killed, a lot more will stop watching, including me.
TJByrum on TWoP made this observation and I couldn't have said it better:
I could complain all day about Jimmy's demise at the end of Season 2, but that doesn't matter anymore. What matters is that his death doscinnected a lot of people from each other. I just felt like Jimmy was the conduit between Nucky and Capone, plus he connected Gillian and Harrow to the overall story more. After his death it just seems like everyone is far away from each other.

So Richard is dead and I'm seriously considering dropping this show. He was the only character left that I actually cared about.

This should have been a series finale. For some reason, I kind of liked the way Richard went out, and I liked the vision in his head because that was heaven for him, being "whole." But so, so sad.

Aw, I really liked the way they tied the season up. I'm sad that Richard is dead but it had to happen at some point. Gillian in jail? Good. Chalky miserable? After running off with that singer, good. Chalky's daughter dead? Sad. Nucky in the same hell? Good.
I'm still loving the show and cannot wait to see where they go next season.

I just don't care about Nucky and Eli anymore and the haphazard plotting has me bored. I'm sort of mad I wasted my time with this show. Me too. Not only was the plotting annoying (Patricia Arquette's plot went nowhere) but they marginalized my favorite characters. Margaret was hardly in it at all, and neither was Rothstein. Van Alden was only in like half the episodes and he only had a few good scenes. When you add in that Eddie and Richard are now dead, and I have zero motivation for caring about this show anymore. Geoffrey Wright and Michael K. Williams are awesome and all, but I don't know if they're enough to keep me watching. The only good thing about this season for me is that Gillian is in jail and Tommy is pretty much safe from her finally.

I wish this had been a series finale. Since HBO never lets anybody know until the current season is showing, whether the show will be renewed, I think that it could have been a series finale, which would have made it interesting to go out with Richard instead of Nucky.
In reality, a person like Richard would probably have been hunted down and either killed, forced to testify against mobsters he killed for and put into the witness protection program or something, or put in jail. It wasn't like he could have blended into society, because of the mask he wore. I always remember one of Gyp's men saying, "that guy with the mask, what the fuck was that?" So Richard probably would have been on the run forever if we're talking real life.

I lost interest mid season and stopped watching. Can someone sum up how/why Gillian is in jail? Was it killing the Jimmy look alike or something else?
It's a crime the way they wasted Michael Shannon this season. Not only was he in only a handful of episodes, but nothing really happened when he was on. Listening to his nagging wife (LOVE that stereotype /sarcasm) or watching Capone go nuts. I actually liked his wife last season because she seemed resourceful, skimming a little off their still to sell for themselves, but all she did this season was nag. Boo.

Turns out Ron Livingston was actually a Pinkerton detective and his whole relationship with her was a long con the purpose of which was to get her to confess to the murder, and it was as ridiculous as it sounds.

I remember the Pinkertons from Deadwood (history!)... Who was the man (I think with a cane) who was so pleased she'd confessed? The boy's father? Gillian's done so much f*cked up stuff I lose count. Also, is Narcisse to be indicted for Maybelle's murder & deported? They lost me there as well.
Aww, Richard...he'll be missed. He was never the same once Jimmy died. The shooting...was he stiff from nerves? Because he hadn't been a sniper in a while?
I've been a longtime Livingston fan so I was happy just to see him onscreen.
This show has always been meandering and slow. It never would've gotten this many seasons on network tv. IA that this could've wrapped it up...which makes me wonder what *will* wrap it up. Nucky dying? Prohibition being overturned? What stories are left to be told here, I wonder.
