On the other hand, kostgard, maybe they re-directed some of the costume budget to the wigs. Those have been a-maz-ing this season, where in Seasons 3 & 4 they actually took me out of the story quite a bit. Last episode it looked like Sam's real hair.

Season 1 is the best. Season 2 has some slow episodes when they're in Paris. My favorite book of the series is Voyager, so I really liked Season 3 save for one episode. Season 4 is when it falls off the rails for me. There was a major story change that I hated, they focus too much on Roger and Bree, and her acting is never up to par with the others. Season 5 has been ok, but the show is a shadow of Season 1, IMO.

Their wig game - especially in season four - was TERRIBLE. Like, on Murtagh you could clearly see where they just glued down a wig over the actor's actual hair/sideburns. And there are so many scenes where both Jamie and Claire look so, so wiggy. They may have lost their amazing costume designer but they did bring on a much better wig wrangler.

I would say when they started to focus on Bri and Roger, the quality plummeted. I had the same problem with the books.

It's weird that they lost Terry, since she's married to Ron Moore and the series was her idea in the first place.
I do think the last couple of episodes have been much better in terms of pacing overall. I know Sam and Caitriona were added as producers in the back half of the season, maybe that's helped?
There are sooooo many good things to come in the books, but they do drag a little around this time. I hope everyone hangs in there so those good things can be brought to life!

General questions - Does each season follow one book? How many books are there? Does the show follow the books close enough?

There are some crazy people in the fandom harassing Sam. He references putting up with this for six years, but I think this latest round comes from the fact that he's isolating in Hawaii. Whatever legit criticism there is has obviously been taken too far by some unhinged people. He and Cait have put up with so much craziness.

I just read his Stories about this and felt very sad for him. It sounds like it has really affected his life.

The Outlander fandom is batshit crazy. I mean...it's amazing. Tom and Lorenzo used to do in-depth reviews of the costumes (which I loved. Their series on Mad Men was amazing as well), but they quit because the fandom was too bonkers. Like, if they said something they didn't like or were the least bit critical of the show, they were attacking them and throwing gay slurs at them.
There is also a faction of them that is convinced that Sam and Cait are a couple in real life, and freak the eff out when presented with evidence that is not the case. I'm sure that's loads of fun for Sam and Cait and for whomever their real life partners are.
I know the optics weren't that great when Sam's project he was working on got shelved due to the pandemic and instead of isolating in place he jumped on a plane to Hawaii and possibly brought some mainland germs with him, but...whatever. He's been staying in place since. There are assholes out there doing far more dangerous stuff. But these folks are nuts.
