To contain the spill-over from the Paul thread.
Very complex individual. Talented, arrogant, violent, and selfish, but at the same time, very funny, sincere, and wanting desparately to try and be a peaceful person. Devoted dad to his younger son, estranged from his eldest. I think he mentioned that he and Julian were only starting to touch base again in the Playboy interviews he gave right before he was killed.

I just watched an interesting documentary called Imagine and was startled to learn about this weird period in the 70s, when he and Yoko took a break from each other and John was getting drunk a lot. Seems John was also hooking up with some other chick during this time. Can anyone shed some more light on this? Did Yoko know about the other woman?

Not only did Yoko know about the other woman, she fixed her up with John! She thought it would be good for him to take a break, and even handpicked his mistress.
ETA: say what you will about Yoko, and they did have their problems, but I think they were good for one another.

Here's the Wikipedia entry on her: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Pang

I hate the Beatles with the fire of a thousands suns, nuns and hot cross buns! Are you being serious? A Beatles hater? I didn't know they existed. Honestly though, I've never been a huge fan and when you tell people this they think you're trying to be difficult or "different". Nope. Just not crazy about their music. It's OK and I can understand their importance musically but as far as my own taste and liking them? Not so much.

I normally have to duck when I say this, but I really kind of like Yoko. I think they were very good for each other. I know she's had her issues with Julian, and he's had his with her, but you can't expect those kinds of relationships to always be good. They can be quite strained, especially when the son in question was hearing non-stop from everyone how this woman broke up his parents' marriage. She's an odd duck, but so was John and I think that's why they worked well together.

I read Cynthia Lennon's book earlier this year and John came across as a real shit in there. Even when she said things like she loved him anyway and how she would marry him again, etc, I would have sawed his dick off for the way he treated her and their son, if I was her. He hit her, he cheated on her, he emotionally abused her and Julian, he's a good songwriter, but if he wasn't dead, I doubt he'd be the Sainted One he is now.

Mr. Fish Mouth is a huge Beatles fan and even named his childhood teddy bear after John Lennon. However, he also knows a lot about Lennon's life and admits that he was a huge dick at times. Not the kind of person he'd want as a husband or father, but still respects for his songwriting talent. It's the same way I feel about Bob Dylan.
Personally the Beatles are not my cup of tea either. But I recognize the huge impact they had.
