Marie-Chantal, being the biggest social climber since Cinderella, fashions herself as royalty despite being married into a family of a deposed king whose children (and grandchildren) do not qualify as royalty themselves. Marius Borg Høiby, son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, admits he assaulted his girlfriend under the influence of cocaine

In a move that has sent shockwaves around the European royal set, Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son has admitted that he assaulted his girlfriend under the ‘intoxication of alcohol and cocaine’.

27-year-old Marius Borg Høiby – whose stepfather is Crown Prince Haakon, future King of Norway, had previously spent 30 hours in custody after being arrested under preliminary charges of causing bodily harm and criminal damage.

Borg Høiby, who stepped down from royal duties seven years ago, then revealed he has been living with mental illness for much of his life:

'I have several mental disorders which mean that throughout my upbringing and adult life, I have had, and still have, challenges. I have struggled with substance abuse for a long time, something I have been in treatment for in the past,’ he said.

'The drug use and my diagnoses do not excuse what happened in the apartment at Frogner on the night of Sunday last weekend. I want to be responsible for what I have done, and will explain myself truthfully to the police', the statement continued.

Crown Prince Haakon’s stepson then went on to apologise for his actions that night: ‘For me, the most important thing is to say sorry to my girlfriend. She deserved neither what happened that night, nor the extreme pressure from both the Norwegian and foreign press afterwards.’

Borg Høiby also apologised to his family, admitting that his actions had ‘greatly affected’ the Norwegian royals.
